Baynes Sound produces 1/2 of all BC shellfish. It's an important site for the K’omoks Nation & is a designated Ecologically Sensitive Area

Despite this, the province has allowed #shipbreaking - one of the most hazardous industries in the world - to occur on its shores 1/ #bcpoli
Shipbreaking involves the demolition of seacraft

It is globally recognized as having the potential to pollute shorelines with harmful substances like asbestos, PCBs & heavy metals.

If properly regulated, it is an important industry — but BC lacks clear laws. 2/ #bcpoli
Deep Water Recovery, the operation in Baynes Sound, was found out of compliance 4 times under BC’s Environmental Management Act.

The company received 3 warnings and 1 advisory.

Still the province refuses to issue fines or revoke their license 3/ #bcpoli

Nearby residents & the K’omoks Nation have raised serious concerns about risks to their safety, the health of their families & the environment.

Today the @bcgreencaucus is calling on the government to regulate the shipbreaking industry. 4/ #bcpoli

Last spring, a group of several NGOs including @WWFCanada sent an open letter urging the @bcndp to follow other global leaders & adopt shipbreaking regulations.

The @THEAVICC also unanimously passed a motion calling for legislation.

To date, nothing has happened. 5/ #bcpoli
Shipbreaking in Baynes Sound is an environmental disaster waiting to happen.

Today I asked if the @bcndp will step up & regulate an industry that is actively endangering the health & rights of First Nations, wildlife & community members. 6/ #bcpoli
.@GeorgeHeyman said the gov't is "working on it".

He assured us that he was aware of the issue & that inspections & meetings will continue.

With 3 years of advocacy & no action, it seems very likely that environmental violations will also continue under the @bcndp. 7/ #bcpoli
This industry poses serious risk to workers, communities & marine environments.

By refusing to act, the gov't is signaling to companies across the province that pollution is tolerable under its watch.

The @bcndp must step up & regulate shipbreaking in BC. 8/8 #bcpoli

The @bcndp have repeatedly promised to protect old growth forests & meaningfully engage w/ First Nations.

They promised a paradigm shift & a deferral on all at-risk old growth.

Yet, old growth within this deferral area is actively being logged on Kwakiutl territory. 1/ #bcpoli
These culturally significant & biologically rich old growth stands are being cleared against the community's will.

Cuts were approved without consultation, leading the Kwakiutl to issue a letter to Min. @BruceRalston demanding the logging stop 2/ #bcpoli

Recently, logging operations have led to landslides, sloughs & tree blowdowns, sending debris into the Cluxewe River.

This is critical salmon-spawning habitat.

In one area, sediment buildup from logging even caused the river to change course 3/ #bcpoli

I've read the stories describing the apology tour of Pope Francis. On Monday after his first visit near Edmonton I decided to comment after the saga had unfolded. It was an emotional week for so many!
1/ #PopeFrancis #Canada #residentialschools #truthandreconciliation
We heard apologies, pleading forgiveness, more apologies, recognition of "cultural destruction" and finally on the flight home #PopeFrancis said "yes, it was a genocide, yes, yes, clearly. You can say that I said it was a genocide."
2/ #residentialschools
theglobeandmail.com/world/article-…
The genocide was justified by the #DoctrineOfDiscovery & while #PopeFrancis, #CatholicChurch, & Crown gov'ts are reluctant to rescind it, the actions I witnessed against the #Wetsuweten in their own territory are empowered by the Doctrine.

Gwa’sala-‘nakwaxda’xw Nation is taking back jurisdiction of child welfare and have been blocked by the @bcndp gov’t from accessing the information from #MCFD they need to abide by their laws and build their programs.

1/ #bcpoli #colonization #MCFD
They have described terrible abuses exacted by #MCFD on their communities and are seeking access to their files...

Files necessary to research their histories, do namings & cultural ceremonies, & develop their services in a culturally-based way.

2/ #bcpoli
Museums, residential and day schools, are all tools used by colonial govts to dominate & subordinate Indigenous People.

Withholding information from First Nations about First Nations, is a continuation of colonial tactics.

Today I tabled legislation to prohibit the use of prolonged solitary confinement BC's correctional facilities for both adults and youth.

Solitary confinement is a dehumanizing and insidious form of psychological harm. 1/ #bcpoli #BanSolitaryConfinement bcgreencaucus.ca/post/b-c-green…
Solitary confinement of more than 15 days is considered torture by the UN Nelson Mandela Rules.

Despite this, on any given day in BC's correctional facilities 33 people are held in violation of these human rights principles. 2/ #bcpoli
We know that solitary confinement does not help rehabilitate the adults and youth in the corrections system, and in fact harms them. Solitary confinement has disproportionate effects on Indigenous people. 3/ #bcpoli #IndigenousPeoples

For 3 of the last 5 summers, BC has witnessed severe forest fires that charred millions of hectares of land and choked out communities.

Today I asked @mikefarnworthbc to identify the specific actions the @bcndp is taking to protect BCers from poor air quality.

1/ #bcpoli
Minister @mikefarnworthbc reiterated that his govt is doing minimal work to protect BCers for this year's inevitable #wildfire season.

Wildfire smoke contains hundreds of dangerous particles and gases that increase the risk of brain tumours and lung cancer.

2/ #bcpoli
Other jurisdictions like Oregon, are taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of their workers during climate related disasters.

BC teachers, farm workers, construction workers, and all those that work outside need similar protections.

A week ago, I spoke at a rally outside the legislature about the #healthcare emergency in British Columbia.

The event was about the crumbling primary care system and family doctor crisis hosted by @BC_GP_Shortage
(BC Health Care Matters)

The week before I attended a vigil/rally hosted by @BCNursesUnion to raise awareness of the deteriorating mental well-being/working conditions of nurses.

ER’s in Clearwater & Port McNeill closed this weekend due to nursing shortage.

It is frustrating to hear the @bcndp (and their lobbyists) list their OUTPUTS hoping to distract BCers from the OUTCOMES in the #healthcare crisis.

It’s not working. I hear about this everyday in my community office!
