#Goa was liberated from over four centuries of #Portuguese rule in 1961. But the Portuguese occupation saw anti-colonial uprisings including the #PintoRevolt or the #ConspiracyofthePintos. It is claimed that the rebels had colluded with #TipuSultan of #Mysore
#history ImageImage
The Pinto revolt at Candolim was the 1st such serious attempt by the people of #Goa to overthrow the #Portuguese. It was a protest against the racial discrimination by the Portuguese.
The conspiracy was hatched largely by the clergy, which was upset at the discrimination ingrained in the Catholic Church against native Goan Christians and a system where the Portuguese were supreme.
Those involved in the plot were inspired by the American War of Independence. It was hatched at the Pinto family residence at Candolim and gradually covered more people, including disgruntled army officers, businessmen and civilians.
The non-clergy element of this revolt was formed by Goans upset at their exclusion from high-ranking posts. Vicars were to ring church bells to unite their parishioners, there were plans to poison Portuguese soldiers or drug them, various units of the army were to join in.
The rebellion was to take place in August 1787, but the plot was uncovered by the Portuguese authorities after an act of betrayal.
A total of 47 conspirators, including 17 priests and seven army officers were arrested. Some were executed, rest were imprisoned or deported to Portugal.
#AbbeFaria, the priest who is described as the father of the scientific study of #hypnotism, was among the leaders of the revolt. He later left for #France. Image
It is claimed that the rebels colluded with #TipuSultan to stage the revolt. On 30 September 1787, Naraina Sinai Dhume, the Portuguese diplomat agent at #Pune, informed the Goa authorities about a pact between Tipu & the #French to conquer #Goa.
In another letter dated 15 October 1787, Dhume writes that he was informed about a letter from a French general Lally, in which he mentions the instructions from Tipu to dispatch his forces to Goa after the conquest of Kittur.
But historians claim it is "hardly reasonable" to expect a Tipu-French involvement in a nativist attempt to shake off Portuguese rule. This is because the relations between the French & the Portuguese remained cordial.
Though the French were Tipu's allies, they were neutral while dealing with the Portuguese. Dhume's letters were also based on hearsay.
The French records at Pondicherry and in Europe are silent on the Tipu- French involvement in the #ConspiracyofthePintos and plans for conquering #Goa at that point.

Much of the writings about #VDSavarkar paint him in black-&-white, when the truth lies in shades of grey. Brushing inconvenient facts under the carpet, does not do justice to #Savarkar's complex personality. This is a thread about Savarkar from a historic perspective #history Image
On 9 June 1906, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, a 23-year-old from Nashik, bid adieu to wife Yamuna and their toddler son Prabhakar, and boarded the SS Persia in Bombay to sail for England to study law. However, even as he was in the high seas,
Stanley Egerley from the Bombay government’s special department sent a confidential letter (14 June) to R. Ritchie in the India Office, London, about Savarkar. Egerley said Savarkar held “…somewhat the same opinions” as the revolutionary Damodar Hari Chaphekar, who assassinated

Till date, I have been unable to understand the adulatory reports about flats & penthouses in #Mumbai being sold for astronomical sums. How many people as a % of population can afford to buy them? The vast majority of people stay in far-flung areas like Vashind, Karjat etc &
spend half their lives commuting in local trains. Their ambitions & lives remain unconsummated thanks to this soul & body sucking commute. Their mental health too goes for a toss. Observe how people are willing to jump at each other in trains for the most trivial reason.
After all, what can you expect when people travel for long hours in crowded trains in the sweltering heat? These extended suburbs are almost like the ghettos of yore in apartheid era South Africa, providing labour to #Mumbai.

Dr #BabasahebAmbedkar was a student at the Columbia University. After reading reports about the plans for a statue, he wrote to the Bombay Chronicle (founded by Sir Pherozeshah Mehta in 1910), opposing the idea of a state as a memorial +

Ambedkar said leaders like Mehta and Gopal Krishna Gokhale had "grappled with many of our problems" and were "entitled to everlasting gratitude for the zeal and sacrifice with which they represented our cause." But a memorial in the form of a statue was "very trivial & unbecoming
As a student in one of the biggest universities of the USA, #Ambedkar said he was "thoroughly convinced of the place a library has in the intellectual and social development of a people." He urged the 'Bombay public' to consider the construction of a library as "the fittest and
