Search top impression rate = Impr. (Top) % = the % of your ad impressions shown anywhere above the organic search results
Search absolute top impression rate = Impr. (Abs. Top) % = the % of your ad impressions shown as the very first ad above the organic search results
NOTE: Donโt get either of these metrics confused with "average position" which compares your ads to the order of other ads.
Top and absolute top metrics give you a potential lead indicator when diagnosing the health of your campaign as well as any changes you may be seeing in CTR or even lead quality.
We have found these prominence metrics to be especially important with offerings that have an urgent nature to them (emergency plumbing) or are exceptionally competitive in the โspeed to leadโ category (real estate investing).
Once youโve identified an issue with impression share, Google gives you additional data points to optimize against:
Search lost absolute top impression share (budget) = how often your ad wasnโt the very first ad due to a low budget.
Search lost top impression share (budget) = how often your ad didn't show anywhere above the organic search results due to a low budget.
Search lost absolute top impression share (rank) = how often your ad wasnโt the very first ad due to poor Ad Rank.
Search lost top impression share (rank) = how often your ad didn't show anywhere above the organic search results due to poor Ad Rank.
Increasing your budget or improving your ad rank (or both) gives you the opportunity to capture more impression share. These metrics begin to give you a sense of what opportunities are available there and what the balance of risks may be in attempting to optimize them.
Which prominence metric do you find most valuable for optimizing your ad location?ย
Why pay for traffic you may have (organically) gotten otherwise?ย
Because your competitor can always steal your traffic. Which means, you could have gotten MORE.
Weโre not talking about a new strategy here. Any decent agency or PPC manager knows that the #1 reason why you should bid on your brand is to protect it from being poached.

Iโve built three multi-million dollar agencies. From my experience, the single most important skill set required to be successful in the agency space has nothing to do with the actual work. Itโs a subset of client management and it will absolutely make or break your business. ๐งต
Communication is THE skill for building and scaling a successful agency. It is critical to build proper communication into your systems, training, evaluations, and culture. This is easier said than done which is why we created The 3 Cs of Communication.
My 17 years of experience as an employer have taught me a sad irony: The better someone is at their job, the worse they are at communication (generally speaking).
If you're measuring #PerformanceMax by the ROAS in your #GoogleAds account, you're missing half of the story.
PMax gives you more than what you're seeing. Remember that it runs heavy on YouTube, GSP (Gmail Sponsored Promotions), Display, and Discover.
There are non-click conversions that happen but never interacted on a click basis with Google Ads.
Look at your Analytics on the date when PMax campaign started until yesterday, and compare it to the previous period.
Look into your organic, direct, and referral traffic, email, and paid search.
Storytime thread ๐
When I was about eight years old, I was really good at chess. I would go to school, and during breaks, Iโd play with my classmates and beat them all.
Until Julius.
Turned out Julius was good. So good, in fact, he destroyed me. Four times. Consecutively.
The funny thing is Julius rarely played chess! So, I asked him how he was so good. He said, โMy dad taught me why and when to move each piece.โ
To be honest, I didnโt get it.
But now I realize he beat me, not because he was more experienced, but because he made better choices with whatever options he had.
