Here's a primer on interplay between ENSO (el Nino and La Niña) and global temperature (1/n)
A few things to notice: A) El Niño months generally warmer than their "neighbors" (in time). 2/n
B. Similarly, La Niña months tend to be cooler than their neighbors 3/n
If you only look at a single color (any of the three) you can see that that particular phase is warming 4/n
El Niño months are warming; La Niña months are warming; La Nada months are warming 5/n
The longer/stronger El Niño events tend to ramp upward as they go; opposite for La Niña 6/n
Technical aside: My depiction of El Niño and La Niña months is less sophisticated than official CPC def'n 7/n
Finally, March 2017 ***and*** Feb 2017 obliterate all prior non EN months, and even most prior EN months. 8/n
We live in a warming world. Our kids will inherit the warmest planet civilization has known. We can still take the edge off of that. 9/9
