Stating the obvious, but: the U.S. Attorney for SDNY who would’ve had to sign off on this, Geoff Berman, is a Trump appointee (and apparently former partner at Rudy Giuliani’s firm)
NB: Times report says FBI sought records related to “several topics,” one of which was the Stormy Daniels payment. I’ll be at least mildly surprised if that turns out to have been the *primary* rationale.

This is an interesting thread, but not super persuasive on the overarching claim. The dismissal or neglect of Locke by many prominent 19th century liberals tracks the ascendancy of the utilitarian strain of liberal political thought over natural rights/contractualism. But...
...that doesn’t really qualify as some sort of demolition of a false yet dominant narrative. That IS the traditional narrative, at least as I’d always understood it. Locke’s “Father of Liberalism” status didn’t turn on some weird misapprehension that J.S. Mill was a Lockean.
The throughline that makes it sensible to talk about a “liberal tradition” encompassing Locke and Mill runs through political practice—with Mill providing an independent theoretical justification for many of the institutional design choices made under Locke’s influence.

Why was a U.S. presidential candidate’s campaign manager sharing the campaign’s polling data with a former Russian military intelligence officer?
You should imagine me asking this question in the same voice Bill Shatner uses to ask “What does GOD need with a STARSHIP?”
Note that Manafort’s lawyers aren’t disputing that he shared what would normally be rather closely held data with Kliminik, or that he falsely denied doing so to Mueller. They’re just suggesting he’d forgot he’d shared it, rather than deliberately lying.
