‼️#Facebook programmed its algorithm that decides what people see in their news feeds to push content likely to make them ANGRY, treating ANGRY emoji reactions 5x more valuable than “likes.”

Anger kept users more engaged, making #Facebook more money.🤬

washingtonpost.com/technology/202…
#Facebook’s researchers warned that favoring “controversial” posts—including those making users angry—could open “the door to more spam/abuse/clickbait.”

2 yrs later, posts that sparked ANGRY reaction emoji were more likely to have disinformation, toxicity and low-quality news🙄
“Anger and hate is the easiest way to grow on #Facebook,” testified whistleblower @FrancesHaugen to British Parliament.

Internal documents show that #Facebook tracked real-world harms exacerbated by its platforms, ignored warnings from employees about risks of their decisions & exposed vulnerable communities around the world to a cocktail of dangerous content.

‼️Mark #Zuckerberg testified *under oath* to Congress in 2020 that #Facebook removes 94% of the hate speech it finds before a human reports it.

Zuck LIED.

In internal documents, researchers estimated that Facebook was removing <5% of all hate speech.🤬

Internal Alarm, Public Shrugs: #Facebook’s Employees Dissect Its Election Role

Company documents show that the social network’s employees repeatedly raised red flags about the spread of misinformation and conspiracies before and after the November vote nyti.ms/3jqPuBi
16 months before last November’s presidential election, a researcher at Facebook described an alarming development. She was getting content about the conspiracy theory QAnon within a week of opening an experimental account, she wrote in an internal report.
On Nov. 5, two days after the election, another Facebook employee posted a message alerting colleagues that comments with “combustible election misinformation” were visible below many posts.

Jambo! Yesterday was a busy day for @CounteringCrime but the best part (for me) was working w @ShubertMwarabu over VTC to teach about online scams that are infesting #swahili language social media, mostly on #facebook. In places FB calls ‘rest of world’ crime is many times worse. Image
We’re training journalists, comedians, musicians and activists who are creating Swahili-language content to spread the word of this risk. I love ❤️ supporting our great partners in Dar es Salaam. #Tanzania #Africa #socialmedia
Today @ShubertMwarabu followed up a day of training by appearing on Clouds FM Power Breakfast. He is singlehandedly getting the word out in his country and helping people stay safer on line. #asantesana Image

🚨Internal #Facebook documents show that posts—including by Trump—fueled the #January6thInsurrection. User reports of “false news” hit ~40,000 per hour.

On Instagram, the account reported most often for inciting violence was @realdonaldtrump.🤬

washingtonpost.com/technology/202…
One FB employee fumed, “This is not a new problem. We have been watching this behavior from politicians like Trump, and the—at best—wishy washy actions of company leadership, for years now….”
“… We have been reading the [farewell] posts from trusted, experienced and loved colleagues who write that they simply cannot conscience working for a company that does not do more to mitigate the negative effects on its platform.”💥

EXACTLY.

Is now a good time to take a look at #Facebook’s VP for Global Public Policy, Joel Kaplan; his connection to William Burck; Kaplan’s and Burck’s connections to Lindsey Graham—and how all three connect directly to Brett Kavanaugh?

We’ll start here:

(1/)
On second thought, maybe we should start with Senator Graham’s performance during Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing. Keep this image in mind while reading the rest of the thread.

Anyway, it’s weird that the Zuckerberg-funded nonprofit’s ad for Graham didn’t mention immigration.

Here’s Mitch McConnell’s brother in law explaining how Graham’s ad was purchased by a “smart team of political operatives,” including Joel Kaplan:

BGP - A possible reason behind the recent disappearance of #facebook #instagram & #whatsapp from the internet.

What is BGP ?

#facebookoutage #networking

A Thread 👇
BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) is the routing method that enables the Internet to function. Without it, we wouldn’t be able to do a Google search or send an email. Image
What is network routing?

“The name of a resource indicates what we seek, an address indicates where it is, and a route tells us how to get there”.

- John F. Shoch

Sounds like #Facebook basically made everything reliant on networking with a single point of failure, including the doors to the server rooms that they needed access to to fix the failure.
I'm not sure what that failure point was, but it sounds like something to do with their DNS setup, which is the system that connects IP addresses (the technical map of the internet) with human-readable names (Domain Names).

Though it's likely more complicated than that...
IP addresses are also used in corporate networks (intranets) that live in a different address space than the general internet, so probably whatever broke also controlled their internal networks... including the doors to the server rooms.
