1/ 🚨 No deal is better than a bad deal. 🚨

As #COP29 nears its end, a packed CAN press conference heard how civil society is holding the line.

The stakes? Survival, justice, and humanity’s future.

Here’s why we’re fighting till the last hour. 🧵 Image 2/ @lnacpil APMDD:

“We can’t understand how rich countries call themselves climate champions yet refuse to put a climate finance goal on the table. We are not going to accept a bad deal - it's preferable to fight for another deal than to be locked into a very bad deal..." Image

🧵1/ 🌎 The #G77’s rejection of the climate finance text at #COP29 is a *make-or-break* moment that gives us an opportunity to push for a #ClimateFinance goal that’s truly fair and equitable.

Because when 80% of the world says "not enough," it’s time to listen. 👇 2/ Rebecca Thissen, Global 🌍Advocacy Lead at @CANIntl, said it straight: “The #NCQG (New Collective Quantified Goal) is *the* defining issue of COP29. It will shape the future of the Paris Agreement.”

And we can't kick this off with an unbalanced, inequitable deal. 💥 Image

🚨 BREAKING: The latest iteration of the Global Stocktake (GST) text has been released.

The clock is ticking on the final hours of #COP28 and this is a critical moment in the negotiations.

Thread below sharing our collective reactions and demands from the @CANIntl network: Image Context: The Global Stocktake (GST) text will provide the blueprint for countries to develop their 2025 Nationally Determined Contributions.

Put simply, it's a report card on where the world is at eight years after the Paris Agreement — and a plan on how to course correct.

📰 BREAKING: At least 2,456 fossil fuel lobbyists have been granted access to the #COP28 climate negotiations.

That's a 400% increase since last year. Fossil fuel lobbyists are poisoning this process. We must #KickBigPollutersOut

theguardian.com/environment/20… "These findings tell us that the dynamics within these spaces remain fundamentally colonial.

COPs have become an avenue for these corporations to greenwash their polluting businesses & foist dangerous distractions from real climate action."

⚡ BREAKING: A record breaking number of fossil fuel lobbyists are at #COP28.

At least 2400 lobbyists are in Dubai to promote fossil fuels — almost a 400% increase from last year.

🧵thread below, which puts this shocking number into perspective: Image @UNFCCC @UN @COP28_UAE @simonstiell Some facts about #COP28:

➡️ There are more fossil fuel lobbyists than delegates from the 10 most climate-vulnerable countries combined.

➡️ There are more than seven times the number of fossil fuel lobbyists than official Indigenous representatives.

.#COP27 will end in hours/days🤔and the new cover text draft did reduce in length.
BUT what we cannot accept is the continued exclusion of priorities of vulnerable countries and the backsliding on the Glasgow Pact - this process must always be moving us forward!
CAN’s reaction⬇️ 2/9
The #COP27 Cover Decision must include language on the equitable phase-out of ALL fossil fuels - coal, oil, AND gas.
A huge number of countries demanded this and the Egyptian Presidency must stop ignoring it.

1. Today we have a special request on the Mitigation Work Program: Less brackets, more clarity for #1o5ToStayAlive ‼️
This special thread is targeted at negotiators and Ministers as they do a final push towards a strong end to #COP27 #ClimateJustice 2. Yesterday we were pleased to wake up to a new text on the MWP. But few changes were made and some crunch points remain. And today…they still do!! As we really need this work programme to put us on track to #1o5C by 2030, we would like to offer some views on the text

1/7 🧵
We’re well into week 2 of #COP27 and the draft cover text has finally dropped: a record-long (8.400 words) COP27 cover decision draft text 36 hours before the official end of COP27. This text lacks a clear structure and vision.

Initial CAN reaction below ⬇️ 2/7 Lack of transparency, and progress in the different negotiations is leading to the undermining of a meaningful outcome. It is the responsibility of the Egyptian presidency to urgently start accelerating the work and show leadership for an ambitious cover decision.

CAN response on #LossAndDamage discussions in the #BonnClimateConference #SB56
[ thread 🧵 ] First a recap from COP26:
7 months ago countries met in the @UNFCCC & signed the Glasgow Pact to work together to increase climate ambition. Two outcomes were critical for frontline communities- a promise to double adaptation, and a Glasgow Climate Dialogue on Loss & Damage / 2

We are reacting to the #UNFCCC text and stocktake now. It would be a betrayal of people around the world, suffering from the impacts & those that are calling for action. The 🇨🇱presidency had 1 job, protect the integrity of the Paris agreement & not allow it to be torn apart by cynicism & greed. Right now it is failing. @climatemorgan
