2/9. Our key take always include:

The report finds that the #FossilFuelIndustry will be responsible for $23.2 trillion (USD) of economic #LossAndDamage (to GDP) between 2025–2050 under a 3°C warming scenario.
3/9. This is important because the report demonstrates that it’s possible to attribute #LossAndDamage costs, and the responsibility for redress, to specific #CarbonMajors .

2/14. Key takeaways on why we cant use it include:

1⃣ Climate models primarily simulate processes in the atmosphere and ocean. They don’t directly simulate the #LossAndDamage caused by an extreme weather event such as how many people died due to a heatwave.
3/14. 2⃣ To simulate the effects of an extreme event, such as the loss of life or infrastructure, the exact extent to which weather components such as temperature and rainfall that caused #LossAndDamage need to be known. In some cases, this can be determined...

Some thoughts that I presented at this conference on 'measuring' heritage loss & damage.

1. Use IPCC risk framework to characterise risk to different aspects of heritage (tangible & intangible). Can be quantitative or qualitative, data or experience driven.
2. Make sure #heritage is considered in national risk assessments & adaptation plans. Not just $ value, but inventories of tangible & intangible heritage @ risk, & registers for degrees of risk.
3. Use national assessments & adaptation plans as basis to include heritage at risk in NDCs, Adaptation Communications, National Communications etc., submitted to @UNFCCC as part of its Global Stocktake.

The 1st #LossAndDamage Transitional Committee (TC1) negotiations are in full swing in Luxor 🇪🇬.

Check out what happened in the first 24h of talks:

Here's a recap of our key demands for policymakers on how the future #LossAndDamageFund should work👇
States at #TC1 must focus on:
▪️Urgently get the #LossAndDamageFund up & running
▪️Center the Fund's design, scope & functions in #HumanRights.

That's the only path forward to quickly provide effective remedy to communities whose rights have been harmed by the #ClimateCrisis.
The #LossAndDamageFund must:
1⃣Address economic & non-economic #LossAndDamage from sudden & slow climate impacts
2⃣Guarantee effective remedy for frontline communities
3⃣Provide rights-based, needs-based & gender-responsive finance that is directly accessible to communities.

This week, CIEL's Senior Campaigner @lienvandamme is in Luxor 🇪🇬 to attend the first meeting of the Transitional Committee (#TC1) of the #LossAndDamageFund.

Here's a 🧵 on what #TC1 is about and why it matters👇 Image
At the climate talks #COP27, States agreed to:
1⃣ Create new funding arrangements to address the impacts of #ClimateChange in vulnerable countries, incl. a #LossAndDamageFund
2⃣ Establish a Transitional Committee that will meet throughout 2023 to decide the details of this fund. Image
No actual money has yet been pledged 💸 & yet – the decision at #COP28 to create a #LossAndDamageFund is a crucial 1st step towards a #ClimateJustice future in which communities are fairly compensated for the losses they are suffering due to a crisis they had no role in creating. Image

What is the new #IPCC AR6 report, and what's it about?

The report is written by hundreds of climate scientists, summarising thousands of papers.

It's basically the world's climate scientists saying "If You Read One Thing This Decade, Read This."

2) This #IPCC report catalogues a terrifying flood of evidence that climate impacts are far worse, harming billions more people, than was predicted just a few years ago.

It marks a shift from climate change talked about as something in the future, to something that IS happening
3) The #IPCC report confirms what communities are telling us: that floods, droughts, cyclones & rising sea levels are increasing in intensity & frequency.

And that it is those in the Global South, particularly marginalised ppl and especially women, who are suffering the most.

1⃣ That although #LossAndDamage costs run will into trillions of US $'s, in the short term focusing on getting a few tens of billions of US $'s a year to support the poorest and most vulnerable communities would be wise.
3/12. 2⃣ Funds to address #LossAndDamage don't necessarily need to come from governments they could come from countries imposing a tax on every fossil fuel company registered in their jurisdiction.
