This is a disgraceful move that proves you cannot trust environmental promises made to the public or Parliament by @RishiSunak's Government

It was during the Parliamentary stages of the Retained EU Law Bill that the Solicitor General Michael Tomlinson said: “we will not lower environmental protections” "or standards" (12th, 21st June, 24th May 2023)

Plans to ban wet wipes containing plastic are obviously welcome, and I understand there is a legal requirement to consult...

BUT, we really need @DefraGovUK
to get on with it, rather than years of dither and delay

As a reminder...

It was in March 2018 that @michaelgove promised us a #DepositReturnScheme for #plastic bottles

Over five years later, it still hasn't happened, and is now promised for 2025!!!

Are we going to have to wait seven years to ban wet wipes?!

🧵1/7 - THE UTTER MADNESS OF THIS

After 50yrs of 'area-based payments' under EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), there are some concerns about #FoodSecurity

The Liz Truss govt seems to be saying that the answer is to carry on with area-based payments?!

theguardian.com/environment/20… 🧵2/7
Their argument is to 'concentrate' on food production, rather than sustainability (exactly what EU CAP did)

And yet, a 2021 @DefraGovUK report concluded that biggest threats to our #FoodSecurity come from the #climate and #nature crisis

Go figure

THREAD: A few more thoughts about this v welcome announcement from @DefraGovUK

I know many of you are thinking "Why the need for a consultation?" and I COMPLETELY understand the frustration, of course!

But, it is probably necessary to ensure a ban is legally watertight It is now ESSENTIAL that @DefraGovUK launches that consultation AS SOON AS POSSIBLE so that we get peat sales banned before the UK hosts the UN climate talks #COP26 in #Glasgow in November

No later than that, please @DefraGovUK

Sooner if at all possible
