It’s a sunny Saturday. I’m in clinic.

I’m on the phone. Sure, virtual care is great for some conditions. But not for all.

The 73 year old with shingles. The 2 year old with a pulled elbow. The 66 year old with heart failure. The 56 year old who keeps mixing up her words. I love being a doctor. I am fiercely protective of my #patients.

There is a lot I do as a #familydoctor. But sometimes my patients need more specialized care.

Healthcare for my patients has been delayed by #Covid19. They are in limbo.

I worry about that.

As a GP-Anesthetist, I’m called to put people on life support measures like ventilators.

As a palliative care doctor, I keep people comfortable during the last phase of life, dying, whether that takes days or years.

Both skills are being put to the test in #COVID19Pandemic. We have watched the #COVID19Pandemic bring hospital systems around the world to their knees.

We know that even in our healthcare system, we have nowhere near the resources we need. We do not have enough beds. We do not have enough doctors and nurses. We do not have enough vents.

March Break. So many people in Ontario travel — across Canada, to the US, to Europe and beyond.

This is the first year I’m dreading it. And it’s because of the potential all that travel has to bring #COVID19 into our homes, schools and communities. Public Health Canada has already advised against travel on cruise ships.

And yet, I know of young families determined to go, excited about their “last minute deals”, convinced that #COVID19 is “just another virus” amd will be easily prevented by good hand washing.

We are on the cusp of another #familydoctor crisis.

The work is hard and complex. It is under-appreciated by many, including other healthcare providers. You are made to feel like you are replaceable by mid-level providers or worse, Dr. Google. thestar.com/news/canada/20… There is less and less interest in pursuing a career in family medicine. I’ve seen it over the ten years I’ve been practicing.

This, even though research and reality both show: family doctors are the foundation of a healthy population and a good healthcare system.

Today my son was cornered at school by kids who wanted to “test” him for #Coronavirus just because he is half-Chinese. They chased him. Scared him. And made him cry.

I was the same age when I was bullied for being Pakistani.

It’s 2020. I thought things had changed by now... 💔 Update: my son is okay. Confused but okay. A Chinese friend and his brother were also targeted.

This morning, we talked about what racism is.

I will talk to the principal. There is hope for education, perspective and compassion. Here’s to making a better world.
