An article popped up last week that is stuck in my brain - both because it's the kind of thing that is more common than we think, but no one talks about, and is (IMHO) going to become more regular. 🧵 Image I'm only using screenshots because they printed her fucking home address, name and picture. Great work, @TamaracTalk & @pillcitybook - truly exceptional journalism, I hope you're genuinely proud of the commitment to ruining lives to make your wordcount.

Something we need to talk &and how it's utter nonsense meant to warp your perception of spaces and their meaning for the worse. A very long 🧵 on law, corporations, and why holding onto the value of "community" is important & not just for the feelings. Image First thing to mention is that NCOSE profits exclusively on violence against SWers more than anyone else. It's not a byproduct, it's both what they sell and the goal of their work. On top of being led/partnering w anti-LGBTQ and anti-abortion folks. Just so we're clear.

When we said that the #EARNITAct is being pushed hard right now? @senrobportman just signed on as a co-sponsor, noting the WILD success of #SESTA #FOSTA - lets look at that incredible success, shall we? First, if you want to read about tech/trafficking from a human rights perspective, can't recommend the Anti-#Trafficking Review more. Their last issue was entirely on tech, including #SESTA, but also other areas of labor/migration/surveillance antitraffickingreview.org/index.php/atrj…

Good morning everyone following #EARNIT ! A long thread on what's happening today & updates on the bill. And S/O to the @hackinghustling team - it's been a long 36 hrs trying to stay up to speed. There'll be a longer recap later, b/c what happens today will change next steps (1/ Today #EARNIT (S.3398) is going to be heard in the Senate Judiciary Cmte. A committee isn't the full Senate, it's where a bill is 1st assigned for debate/editing - here is their website if you want to see members/what they do: judiciary.senate.gov (2/

The Kraft case that we all forgot about? It's *SUPER* important, but for reasons that aren't easy to talk about. This case shows us exactly what the utility of #trafficking to cops/how you can push what is acceptable in #policing for a few reasons: (1/10) news-press.com/story/news/cri… First, you have great PR to fall back on. You have journalists churning out something juicy that they don't understand, so they generally either re-print your press release or get completely distracted. Look at these headlines. As a cop, don't you want this PR? Esp NOW? (2/10)

I just need to say - every 2 weeks is a reminder that Twitter/private companies are arms of policing. I write about #sexwork policy for an advertising site - I think it's important to organize/inform about work WHERE PEOPLE WORK. Same as any other kind of #labororganizing... (1/ Bc it's the sex industry, every two weeks they post the article, tag me & Twitter ALWAYS deletes the notification. When I tag the company, that tweet gets flagged. It's literally informing ppl on laws affecting their #health & #safety but because it's sex work, it's blocked (2/

Here's what EARN IT does. The bill establishes a 19 person, gov appointed commission to create red flags for interactive platforms (websites, apps, lists servs) to screen for child porn, trafficking - sounds innocuous, right? Always does! (1/19 congress.gov/bill/116th-con… #FUCKEARNIT Unsurprisingly, it does a shit ton more than that. The mandate of the commission covers a lot - training of sites, age rating/gating (so rating all material/content) parental controls, where to send that kind of info when they do flag it, & the commission is headed by AG Barr (2/

There are a few completely unfounded claims that consistently arise around how #decriminalization would impact the size of the industry being repeated by @Polaris_Project @ncose & others operating in bad faith, and demonstrating an embarrassing disinterest in data. (1/ ) There are claims that there would be an explosion of the size of the industry. But lets talk abt studies: The country which has decriminalized (New Zealand) & the most recent report on a country which instituted increased criminalization through the #NordicModel (NIreland) (2/ )

Undercover stings against #sexworkers are acts of state sexual violence. While the loss of Yang Song should make no one question the truth of that, unsurprisingly there is so much pushback on the idea, so I wanted to organize my thoughts in a thread (1/12) documentedny.com/2018/11/26/one… It's intimate physical contact through fraud. That's sexual violence. Think about what it's like to then have to sit with the cop you gave a blow job to who then arrested you. What about when you're giving info on your experience of trafficking? Recently, I've been seeing people saying that Nevada is the state w the highest rates of trafficking (5.6/100K) & wanted to figure out where that came from. Surprise! The stat is absolutely bullshit - here's why it (and the @Polaris_Project stat behind it) is trash. @Polaris_Project So the number comes from the work of this rando Boston law firm that decided to run some basic stats from the Polaris report, put out a "report" & grift as knowing anything about #trafficking, while spouting anti-#sexwork rhetoric (2/) geoffreygnathanlaw.com/topics/most-ca…
