The #Arctic air is flowing down over the #American continent as Rossby waves continue to roll around the globe. The #Polar vortex is leaking more often than it used to. Say farewell to the familiar seasons as we knew them. It doesn't seem like they'll be returning anytime soon. Image "After a largely mild end to 2023, cold jet stream air from the polar vortex appears set to descend on parts of the U.S. later this week, adding to a chaotic January that saw reports of several deaths, heavy snow and tornadoes Tuesday."

Extreme heat is pushing #India to the brink of ‘survivability.’ They claim this to be the case by 2050, but as Earth's energy imbalance surges and the 2022 heat map (pictured) shows, without urgent mitigation, this could be the case as soon as 2030 in many regions. Image "By 2050, India will be among the first places where temperatures will cross survivability limits, according to climate experts. And within that time frame, the demand for air conditioners (AC) in the country is also expected to rise nine-fold"

This is a carbon removal (being constructed) site in Texas. Assess the size and scale of the footprint and clearance required. If it were possible to actually sequester the CO2 and if you had the energy - 80,000 of these sites would be required. There’ll be nothing left. Image Read more about it here. The amount of carbon required to produce a site of this scale must be huge for a starter. carbonengineering.com/news-updates/c…

A monster leak of Arctic air due to Jet stream distortion over Sacndanavia led #Norway to dip to -49,7C & #Sweden to dip to -43,8C. This is BECAUSE of GLOBAL warming. Cold air troughs are being used by reality deniers to proclaim “You see, global warming is a hoax” See more 👇 Rossby waves are a result of the Arctic continues to warm faster than elsewhere in response to rising GHG concentrations - meaning the frequency of extreme weather events caused by persistent jet patterns will only increase. Wow - The Great Lakes typically have an ice coverage of 55% during the winter months, causing at least half of their surfaces to freeze. As of yesterday, they had a combined ice cover of just 0.2%. Lake Superior 0.5%, Lake Michigan 0%, Lake Huron 0%, Lake Erie 0%, Lake Ontario 0% Image Read more on - "Do the Great Lakes Ever Completely Freeze Over in the Winter?" a-z-animals.com/blog/do-the-gr…

2023 was the hottest year in 125,000 years. The impacts on the climate were unprecedented. Here are a few of the devastating impacts .#Acapulco was totally blown away by a climate bomb. Image The Canadian wildfires of 2018 were the most severe in history. An area the size of Washington state was devastated. Fortunately, Siberia did not suffer the same fate this year. Image

The heat crisis in Madagascar is worsening. These children are not playing on a beach, but sitting beside a water hole on a riverbed where people are desperately digging to find drinking water. Image Here is the more expansive view. In the Ambovombe region of Madagascar, the drought has persisted for so long that the local farmers now harvest cactus leaves. The whole region is too dry to be agriculturally productive. Image

Phoenix is currently breaking the record for the number of consecutive days above 45°C, making it one of the first cities in the world at risk of being uninhabitable without air conditioning due to extreme heat. It has to be near the top of the list for cities facing extremes Image For those asking - I should have stated - It’s 18 days and counting with no end in sight - that’s consecutive days with 110-degree F or higher temperatures.

Based on current temperatures in the #Arctic & sea surface temps elsewhere, there is a chance of a blue ocean event occurring within the next 5 years. If this happens, it will signify a shift into a totally new #climate paradigm, one that pushes civilization to the brink. #NASA If you thought the heating of the oceans was accelerated by a lack of Sahara dust or shipping exhaust particles....you ain't seen nothing yet.

Cyclone #Biparjoy is super-charging over the warmer seas. Biparjoy’ means ‘disaster’ or ‘calamity’ in Bengali. This certainly looks like it will be another #climate disaster. Follow the IMD for live updates if required.

This is the future of heat adaptation for Urban heat Islands and other applications. “City in Sierra Leone covers buildings in mirrors to fight extreme heat” newscientist.com/article/237576… For those without sub - "1000's of people in Freetown, live in settlements dense with metal/concrete buildings that trap heat and make heatwaves more dangerous. An experiment has shown that covering such buildings with a cheap mirrored film can substantially reduce temps inside"

The desert is coming. The #Sahara desert is expanding towards Southern #Spain and #Italy, and experts predict that both regions will become deserts by 2100 or even sooner. Unfortunately, not much grows in the desert. Image Natalie Thomas, author of the study that quantified the Sahara’s century of growth, asks: “Morally, how do we deal with the fact that developing countries are paying the price?”

Spain's farms are dying. Their pastures are disappearing. Their livestock is becoming too expensive to even feed. Their ministers resort to calling for the EU crisis mechanism to be triggered. The #Climate crisis is now an EU farming and food supply crisis. Image Spain and Portugal have requested the activation of the European Food Security Crisis Preparedness and Response Mechanism (EFSCM), which could provide up to 450 million euros. However, other EU nations have been hesitant to initiate the mechanism, it requires unanimous agreement.

“Expect chaos” - we really are in uncharted warm waters - Dr Jennifer Francis “We have not had a strong El Niño, in conjunction with ocean heatwave in the North Pacific, in conjunction with an Atlantic ocean where the temperatures are almost off the charts.” Image Full quote and link here. This really is new territory for climate forcing. Reducing shipping aerosols is going to have huge consequences.

India continues to bake. Hearing reports of unusually high humidity in areas that’s not common. High temperature combined with high humidity is deadly. 6 hour survival period at certain levels. The night temps are staying above 30C also in many parts - millions sleeping outside. Image I should add that some areas in Pakistan are actually suffering even higher temperatures than India. The dangers of wet bulb temperatures are going to be a major issue of concern in the coming decades for this region. Image

This summer may push India closer to the limits of human survival. Rising temperatures are forecast in the coming weeks after India experienced its hottest February on record. The region is at serious risk of wet-bulb if global temperatures continue to rise. Image One of the deadliest Wet bulb events was actually in Chicago- 700+ victims - mostly elderly and poor succumbed to unbearable heat & humidity, making the 1995 heat wave one of the deadliest climate disasters in U.S. history - killed 3x as many as Storms Sandy/Harvey combined. Huge amounts of CO2 are produced just to lay the concrete for a large wind turbine.
481m3 of concrete is required alone - so that equals 115.4 tons of CO2 being emitted. Its total carbon footprint is ~241.85 tonnes of CO2. There is no easy fix. Less energy - less emissions. The whole construction and installation of a single turbine leave a carbon footprint that takes approximately 10 years to recover with emissions-free power. The turbines are made of fibreglass and carbon fibre which leave a huge carbon footprint. There is no easy fix.

There is a monster leak of Arctic air heading towards the whole of North America. Many places will experience -20C. These leaks are becoming more frequent as the jet stream weakens. This is a new climate. The stability of the Holocene is over. The Grid will really struggle is areas not designed for Cold snaps. Certain areas where agriculture exists all-year-round may also be adversely affected. Modern civilization wasn’t set up for this weather flipping.

A thread on Aerosol masking - It is really important for people to understand that even if you could magically stop all emissions tomorrow - ~1C is locked in due to the masking effect. An extra 1C on top of current warming is disastrous. 🧵 Observational and computational papers enabled by COVID are consistent with masked warming on the order of 1C. This number is consistent with the best estimates of transient climate response and aerosol forcing.

When challenged on the feasibility of direct air capture (DAC) one companies executive's response to us was “are we trying to empty an Olympic-sized swimming pool with a teaspoon? Yes, we are…” - let's put that into a little more context, shall we 🧵 Let's say the size of the problem is the volume of the ocean on Earth (1.335E9 km3), which is more appropriate since the atmospheric volume is roughly the same. Say we are using our largest ship, the Nimitz class aircraft carrier to scoop the water out.
