The result of the #OSSTF binding arbitration pathway vote on September 27 will have important strategic implications for all unions. Here’s a thread 🧵 about what’s at stake for the labour movement.

#canlab #onted Image Though there has been some opposition to the pathway within #OSSTF, the proposal is expected to pass given the leadership’s communications strategy, which frames binding arbitration as key to securing salary gains in the face of a hostile provincial govt.

Ford blinked. He saw parents and other unions mobilizing to support CUPE education workers. He saw poll numbers suggesting the public blamed his government for the dispute. He saw unprecedented public support for a general strike – and he backed down.

#canlab #onpoli #onted Ford overplayed his hand by unnecessarily suspending basic union rights and freedoms. It backfired. By refusing to negotiate and imposing a legislated settlement the PCs managed to unify a group of unions that had been internally divided.

Ford blinks. Agrees to withdraw the Notwithstanding clause in exchange for a commitment from the union to withdraw strike action.

Much ink has been spilled in recent weeks over union endorsements for Ford's Conservatives in Ontario - and what that may mean for the future of labour politics in Canada. Here's a 🧵.

#canlab #onpoli #cdnpoli For context, the 8 construction unions that endorsed Ford have a combined membership that represents less than 5% of Ontario's total union membership. The NDP secured support from a broader range of much larger public and private sector unions.

Last weekend @NDP convention delegates adopted a constitutional amendment on labour affiliation & convention delegate entitlement. In this 🧵, I try to make sense of the change by providing some historical context for the #NDP-union relationship.

#canlab #cdnpoli .@CanadianLabour is a founding partner of the #NDP having played a significant role in the formation of the party in 1961. But the relative strength of labour’s institutional ties has varied over time.

Peter Kormos passed away 8 years ago today. Despite having served 18 of his 23 years at Queen’s Park on the opposition benches and fewer than 6 months in cabinet, the former #NDP MPP commanded a profile that was the envy of most cabinet ministers. THREAD⏬

#onpoli #PeterKormos Kormos’ populist brand of left politics, his oratorical skills and his in-your-face style of political engagement made him stand out from the crowd. His wicked sense of humour and ability to produce witty one-liners and punchy sound bites made him a media favourite.
