Travis Toews right now at the Ed. choice forum: “I would fund transportation for students to go to private schools, and increase capital funding for charter schools.” #AbEd
Brian Jean: “We need to get back where we were 25 years ago in education. There are good and bad things in the draft curriculum. Math and ELA got some good reviews. Some concepts were age inappropriate. The grade 5-6 drama curriculum has some odd things.”

🧵
AB does not exist in a bubble.
🛑When Jason Kenney lifted the cap on charter schools it wasn’t because #ABEd is unique.
🛑When the UCP adopted a 💯 % voucher policy at their 2019 AGM it wasn’t because they believe every family actually has choice..... 1/x 2/x It’s because privatization follows a playbook - and right wing governments around the world follow it.
Alberta charter and private schools are NOT unique -right down to the way they claim to benevolently help those in the margins to prove their value: #Abed#Ableg
Now is the time for all Albertans to band together to let Premier Kenney and Minister LaGrange know that their proposed curriculum simply cannot stand.
#Abed#ableg 1/x 2/x We’ve been working hard to give YOU actionables:
1. Use our letter writing app to send a letter to them, and copy SOS, so we can keep track of the thousands of Albertans raising their voices.

WARNING: LONG 🧵
With the recent announcement of a new STEM Charter school coming to #yyc, we thought it an opportune time to set the record straight on charter schools and separate fact from fiction.
Please make use of the links we've embedded!! #abed#ableg#abpoli 1/x
🍎1. Charters are privately managed, publicly funded schools ✅
By defn, chartering ANY service is when private citizens organize to privately reserve a special service not offered.Commonly, teams/orgs charter a plane/bus to procure a special service specific to that groups needs

Long Thread, with a big announcement at the end.
Pls bear with us.
For almost 6 years, SOS AB has been uncompromising in our dedication to universal, accessible and equitable public education. #Abed#ableg#SaferSchoolsAB2. We believe all public dollars should go to public education, that public education must be barrier free, and redefined as unable to be selective in ANY way.
If you want to know more about who we are and what we believe please read: supportourstudents.ca/blog/who-we-are #Abed#ableg

🧵This article lays out the plan Kenney is putting into play here in #ABed. Considering #Bill15 (promotes & eases legislation around charter schools) in conjunction w this govts complete lack of leadership to reopen schools safely-can only be interpreted as market creation.
2/x Lack of leadership, planning and funding for a safe reopening of Alberta public schools is not incompetence, it’s strategic.
It’s deliberate undermining of public education. #abed#ableg
🧵 Last week Minister @AdrianaLaGrange scolded the CBE, citing among other things their inability to put students first.
One would expect a leader in her position to lead by example: so let’s take a look back at some of her initiatives over the past year or so. #abed#ableg1. @AdrianaLaGrange Delayed school budgets until 6 weeks into the school year (Oct 2019) creating fiscal uncertainty for school boards. Not great for students!

If you are not already motivated to stand up and fight for public education, we have some inspiring news for you!

We've received notice from our friends @backpackthefilm that their amazing documentary is NOW AVAILABLE FOR HOME STREAMING!!! #abed#ableg2/x SOS has been facilitating screenings across AB since 2017. This film is incredibly impt viewing now more than ever!

IMPT: PLS READ
The #ABEd Ministry released a Choice In Education survey yesterday.
Our position on this survey:
-The survey is poorly designed and ineffective for collecting data as multiple responses can originate from the same IP address or multiple hard copies.
2/ Because of this it is clear the survey is strictly for optics & the illusion of engagement.
*Choice* to this government refers to more charter and private schools and continued underfunding of public education.
The Choice In Education Act is likely already written. #abed

🧵We’d like to take a moment (since we get an *extra* hour today 😉) to highlight the real damage austerity takes on a society, and why we are so concerned about Alberta Budget 2019. /1 #abed#ableg#RealCostOfCuts
🧵We know sometimes its hard to see the collective damage, we know it can be difficult to see why this affects you.
We hear these things all too often:
-It’s OK if they reduces transit operating hours, I don’t use transit anyway. /2
