The US is not environmentally #sustainable: The #EcologicalFootprint, which equals EF per person multiplied by #population, of the current (2016) US population of 323 million uses the biological capacity of 2.2 Americas.
The maximum #sustainable #population at our current EF per person is only 145 million. The maximum that would maintain our current #QualityOfLife, as measured by the UN’s #HumanDevelopmentIndex, is only 253 million.
Since the start of EF tracking (1961), our #growth in EF has been caused entirely by #population #growth, more than offsetting a small reduction in our personal #consumption.
Projecting the same decrease in EF per person and increase in biological capacity (due to improved #technology) since 1970 forward to 2060, the EF will be smaller but will still use 1.8 Americas. It would be even smaller if not for projected #population #growth to 404 million.
And that projected #population #growth excludes the tens of millions of additional #immigrants that would result from the #immigration policies being proposed by #JoeBiden and the #DemocraticParty.
We could become #sustainable by 2060 if we voluntarily reduce our #population to its 1980 size of 227 million. That means reducing our annual total (legal and illegal) #immigration to no more than a “replacement rate” (zero net immigration) level (an “#ImmigrationMoratorium”).
We have an overdue moral obligation to our descendants to stop and ultimately reverse our #population #growth, which, with #fertility being at or below replacement level since 1972, is almost entirely caused by #immigration, until our country is environmentally #sustainable.
