As Egypt hosts #COP27 let’s not forget the estimated 60,000 political prisoners held there.

We join the calls to release Alaa Abd El Fattah who is on hunger strike right now. #FreeAlaa

We also want to shine a light on some of those in prison here in the UK in this thread:🧵

While the eyes of the world are on #cop27egypt it's crucial to pressure their Government on their human rights record and for political prisoners release.

Reports of human rights abuses range from harassing activists & journalists to torturing prisoners:

But many of the delegations arriving in Sharm el-Sheikh today are also increasing repression of protest. Often in direct response to nonviolent climate movements.

Some speaking at #COP27 this week, are silencing calls for #ClimateAction at home.

As world leaders rehash their broken promises this week on the world stage, some of those calling for action not words sit in prison.

Here in the UK people are in prison, some without trial, simply for asking @GOVUK to stick to their #COP21 pledges like Just Stop Oil.

Louis has been on remand since 5th July, he’s likely to stay in Prison until Febuary next year. 7 months in prison, for disrupting televisised sporting events for a matter of minutes. Likely much longer than any sentence he will get when he’s finally given a trial. #FreeLouis

The Dartford Duo, Morgan & Marcus, have also been denied bail since they closed roads for 36 hours by suspending themselves from a 450ft high Bridge across the Thames. Their brave action demanded an end to the Governments 100 new oil & gas licenses as part of @JustStop_Oil.

They are expected to appear in court on the penultimate day of #COP27 but they could be held on remand until their full trial, which is still months away. How can the UK Government negotiate climate targets while imprisoning those calling for them to meet their commitments?

The UK has already increased sentencing for peaceful protest this year, now they are trying to expand laws to restrict and surveil activists who've not even commited a crime. 15 people are in prison in the UK for protesting to #KillTheBill in Bristol. Support them @JBPProtest

Will Sunak end the oil licenses in Egypt? Or just greenwash his Government as they fail to act on climate while silencing dissent at home.

Share to support those in prison & defend the #RightToProtest everywhere.

Breaking update: Police are making pre-emptive arrests right now, just in case people demand the UK act in line with climate science instead of just making empty promises at #COP27

If you believe in care & freedom, we must defend the right to protest.

The arrests come days after fossil fuel funded think tanks & right wing press attacked the police response times to @JustStop_Oil actions.

However harsher laws, night time raids, and a Government that listens to lobbyists not the public won't stop us. And they haven't this AM:

Update: On a 🧵 about crackdowns on protest and political prisoners around the world, we want to share this outrageous news from Iran where law makers are now seeking the death penalty for those imprisoned during the ongoing #IranProtests. #RightToProtest

Breaking UK news: 16 Just Stop Oil supporters in prison in the UK, after the police raided the homes of activists and made arrests at protests. Today 11 supporters were remanded till trial, taking the total to 16 in prison in the UK for calling to end new oil as #COP27 continues.
