This morning, Dutch police arrested six climate activists on suspicion of incitement, including @Jelle_De_Graaf and Tessel Hofstede. Actor @SiegerSloot had the police at the door, but after searching his house the officers had to leave again because he was not at home. [1/7]
Earlier this week one of Extinction Rebellion NL’s attorneys had already contacted the Public Prosecutor and informed them that arrests are not necessary and all XR rebels will report for questioning if requested. [2/7]
Despite this, peaceful climate activists are being lifted out of bed at 7 a.m. and arrested. Children stood by and watched as their Mums and Dads were taken away for peaceful climate action. Read our attorney's response in the press release. [3/7] extinctionrebellion.nl/police-arrest-…

The arrest of several journalists this week sparked concern for press freedom. But while the state increase repression, the papers and right wing think tanks want the police to go further & faster.

What led us to this point, and what was the press's part in it? 🧵
The only question police asked @charlotterlynch before she was held for 7 hours was how she knew to be there.

But @TheSun journalists who knew about Just Stop Oil weren't arrested. They were invited to take photos of a nonviolent protesters front door being smashed in.

Why? 🧵
This week journalists, photographers, and film makers were arrested during @JustStop_Oil protests.

But if this was just a mistake in the heat of the moment, why was this photographers house searched while he remained in custody for hours?

As Egypt hosts #COP27 let’s not forget the estimated 60,000 political prisoners held there.

We join the calls to release Alaa Abd El Fattah who is on hunger strike right now. #FreeAlaa

We also want to shine a light on some of those in prison here in the UK in this thread:🧵 Image
While the eyes of the world are on #cop27egypt it's crucial to pressure their Government on their human rights record and for political prisoners release.

Reports of human rights abuses range from harassing activists & journalists to torturing prisoners:
theintercept.com/2022/10/07/egy…
But many of the delegations arriving in Sharm el-Sheikh today are also increasing repression of protest. Often in direct response to nonviolent climate movements.

Some speaking at #COP27 this week, are silencing calls for #ClimateAction at home.

“A big step towards authoritarianism” @GeorgeMonbiot

The govt are excluding debate on new anti-protest laws

The entire Lords committee stage debate on new clauses was crammed into one late night

The Commons have been excluded & the Lords marginalised
“This is proper police state stuff”

Priti Patel shoved 18 extra pages into the #PolicingBill after it had passed through the Commons & the Lords in a ploy to avoid effective parliamentary scrutiny

@GeorgeMonbiot decries the lack of media & public outcry. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
The deeply-authoritarian #PolicingBill hands police vast new powers to fine, remove or arrest ordinary people who simply wish to peacefully protest

@Femi_Sorry explains👇

@pritipatel’s new amendments contain new powers to ban named people from protesting

On Saturday 20th November 8 people in Cardiff, aged between 21-69, joined groups all across the UK in an act of mass civil disobedience in solidarity with the #Highway9 who were jailed earlier this week, and the 23 others who are expected to be summoned to court next week.
Exercising their democratic #RightToProtest, the group stood in the road and blocked traffic between HMP Cardiff and the Cardiff Magistrates Court for 10 minutes until a fire engine with sirens came so they moved swiftly and continued their protest on the pavement.
One of the group, Liz (37) a Project Manager from Penarth, stated: "I felt I needed to do this today to show my solidarity with the Insulate Britain protestors. Whether or not you 100% agree with their methods, it is not right that people who are simply demanding the ........

When the 68 uprising graffitied Paris with “Be Realistic, Demand the Impossible!” who thought this call to action would meet its alter ego years later in the UK?

For what is Insulate Britain if not: Be Impossible, Demand the Realistic?

🧵A #Thread.
In the face of the #climate emergency happening now, XR recognises the need for disruptive actions that highlight the severity of the crisis. Insulate Britain is playing a vital role in shifting the Overton Window around public awareness and urgent government action. #ActNow
The recent attempt to ban a form of protest from happening anywhere in the UK is a warning to all of us who dare to stand up for truth; the UK government is coming for us all. It is also a complete vindication of our resistance.

Yesterday legislation effecting fundamental rights such as the #RightToProtest & the right of #GypsyRomaTravellers to a home sailed through parliament without proper debate & scrutiny after a ridiculously short & disjointed time allocation
Many MPs didn’t get to speak. Amendments tabled after painstaking inquiries such as that of @HumanRightsCtte were ignored. Our amendments followed on a large volume of written evidence & several sessions of oral evidence & our detailed reports.
Yet none of this was of interest to this Tory Govt. In fairness some of their backbenchers were concerned but to no end. This isn’t evidence based law making. It’s a travesty & British democracy, #HumanRights & the #RuleOfLaw are in peril.

Most of the headlines & articles tell us that students staged a walkout (the protest remained on site) due to upset over a flag & the uniform. Students tried to use the recommended school channels to raise concerns, they even got over 1000 people to sign a petition. This was ignored by the school's leadership. When you exhaust all available routes, what else is left to do to make change happen?

1/22 Some thoughts on how the #PoliceCrimeSentencingCourtsBill falls far short of international standards on the right of #PeacefulAssembly – especially the UN Human Rights Committee's recently adopted #GeneralComment37 on #Article21 ICCPR

#thread #humanrights #echr #Covid19gr #constitution #freedomofassembly #righttoprotest
