Nerd boys wanting to date me because I "remind them of Ramona Flowers" have fucking ruined Scott Pilgrim to me.

Spoiler: no girl wants to date Scott Pilgrim.

There are a lot of terrible things about this, and Ramona is ALSO deeply flawed and kind of shitty (who isn't, honestly), but reader, I will tell you, I've dealt with part of the Scott Pilgrim story for real and man, it sucks.

A story:

In college, I was hyperfocused on class work. I went to a private art school, and didn't let myself socialize much my first year or two.

My second year, on Valentines day, I got a message from a random dude who was like "you dont know me, but I see you walking around all the time and you're super cute and seem super cool".

In hindsight, getting a message like that should have been a red flag. But I was somewhat people starved by that point, and flattered, and he was cute and we had a ton of similar interests.

So, we started chatting, and before long, hanging out. Not dating, really, since he was cagey about his relationship status so I was like "well that's a no", but I still developed feelings for him.

Even though we weren't "dating", he became my other half at school.
And readers, dude looked, acted, and idolized Scott Pilgrim so much that even my professors nicknamed him Scotty P.

(I was in SCADs seqa arts program before the Scott Pilgrim movie even came out and before the comics wrapped up).

You might see where this is going, sharp readers, and so did I, but that didn't stop what happened. We messed around. And then suddenly I found out about his girl friend.
Yes.

His high school girlfriend.

It's so cliche it's sad. This poor girl had literally written LJ posts in which she was like "I'm pretty sure my BF is cheating" and described dreams she had about kicking my ass. Man, I dont blame her.

I felt shitty about the entire situation. I let this guy into my heart and got played. He stayed with his High School girl friend for a bit though. I avoided contact with him entirely after that.

UNTIL: I was interviewing at an animation studio a few years later, and being introduced around to the production crew and, lo and behold, this dude is one of the producers on the show.

I did not take the job.

Anyway, if the books and movies dont make it obvious, Scott Pilgrim is a story about a shitty guy treating people like shit and acting like a hero about it, and it should absolutely not be idolized, you walnuts.
