My rear-guard action against the hair loss that began (SUCH THAT I COULD SEE IT EVEN IF NO ONE ELSE COULD) at age 16 is now basically the Elves grabbing every last ship to Valinor (EVEN IF MY WIFE DISAGREES). Should I:*
* My wife has been suggesting I Bic it since we first married and I was still sporting what photos dishonestly suggest was a full head of hair, so I think she's indulging her Patrick Stewart issues here.
Upside to Option 1: I may be able to lie my way into some semblance of dignity when I look at the mirror.
Upside to Option 2: I could move to DC and no one would notice.

That's not an upside.
Upsides to Option 3: Happy wife, happy life; also, combing my hair before court would get A LOT easier.
Upside to Option 4: Lets me keep a bit of dignity while scientists figure out how to revert those hairless skin cells into hair follicles.

"We have a moral duty to aid the weak and the oppressed." Compelling.

"We have no right to control our own borders if the right age-and-sex mix appears there." Self-evidently stupid and counterproductive.
Arguments are not won purely on merit, but on the manner in which they're proposed and argued.
This is especially true with matters in which the moving party seeks to have our laws, if not suspended, then at least highly-charitably enforced and interpreted: If you want to make a case that our immigration law as it exists is immoral, you can't simply hand-wave at it.

Being enamored of the way things were when you were young does not make you conservative; it makes you nostalgic.
Protesting one's conservatism has very little meaning if the substance of your protest is nostalgia and self-appellation.
Similarly, if the entirety of one's conservatism is a single policy stance, coupled with a congenital resistance to change, this merely makes one idiosyncratically intransigent.

1. Honest conservatives have their work cut out for them. Not only must they face the reality of having lost influence on the party they once called home. They must mount a rear-guard action against liberals who allege that conservatism has always been despotism in disguise.
2. With every day that goes by, it’s harder not to see the specter of monarchy lurking, often overtly, among Republicans who would otherwise rail against “big government” Democrats. It’s as if they long secretly for the emergence of an American king.
3. Newt Gingrich said investments in Brett Kavanaugh will yield dividends if SCOTUS blocks attempts to release Trump’s tax returns. Brian Kemp, the GOP candidate for GA governor, said nonpartisan calls for transparency in managing voter rolls amounted to “dirty tricks.”

People hate being called racist, antisemitic, Islamophobic, homophobic, xenophobic etc. Not just because they’re afraid of being labeled that way, but because they truly don’t want to think they are.

That means they’ll do anything to hide those feelings from themselves.
This is why our discourse around hate is so confused.

We think people *must* be consciously aware of their racism *and* open about it to be racist.
But most people are neither. Not just that, they’re horrified that they might be, especially since there’s probably a part of them whispering that they might be.

Most people who defended things like segregation and who support the Muslim ban refused to believe they were racist.
