I find the argument

"if we're to teach students stats, data management, computing, programming, etc what else should we drop?"

so frustrating. #ESA2018 1/n
If you only look at it from the point of adding new lecture courses on all these things then of course we run out of time/hours 2/n
However there are opportunities to introduce these topics throughout the entire ecology/biology curriculum, with dedicated courses being used only where there is demand and people to teach the. 3/n
Of course this takes effort, across the board, from many people to introduce these skills in a consistent way throughout the curriculum, but it's clearly something we should be doing 4/n
It also doesn't mean you have to teach all the fancy data science bells and whistles stuff that several presenters showed 5/n
However, even then, do the faculty that need to teach these courses have the required skills to do it? Limited evidence suggests that many (most?) don't... how do we fix that? 6/n
@ethanwhite made the point that many junior faculty coming through the the ranks do have these skills and are capable of teaching them. So maybe we'll grow out of the problem given time? 7/n
This was part of the discussion after INS 19 Skills and Knowledge for Data Intensive Ecological Research across the Data Life Cycle #ESA2018 8/8
