"Romance on the High Seas" (1948) is a pleasing trifle that made Doris Day (in her film debut) a star as she introduced the Jule Styne-Sammy Cahn standard "It's Magic" while crusing from New York to Rio. Truly, there wasn't a genre that Michael Curtiz couldn't handle.
The crew of "Romance on the High Seas" has a pedigree, to say the least. Styne-Cahn songs, Busby Berkeley choreography, a script by Jules and Philip Epstein ("Casablanca") and I. A. L. Diamond (Billy Wilder's co-writer on "Some Like It Hot") and Curtiz directing. Quite a list.
TCM showed "Romance on the High Seas" on Sunday as part of its #SummerUnderTheStars marathon for Doris Day. Who is still going strong at the tender young age of 96.
