One of the most beautiful railway stations in the world, in Maputo, Mozambique. Constructed from 1908 to 1916 in the Beaux-Arts style by the Portuguese architects Mario Veiga José Ferreira da Costa and Alfredo Lisboa de Lima, replacing the first station in the country built 1895.
The station links Mozambique with South Africa, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe. The grand exterior is matched by an equally charming interior.
The station is run by Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique, CMF, and is 51m tall, copper roofed structure with a ground floor and a first floor.

Clever. Students of an architecture school in Kyoto have made a scale model of a timber frame home to promote traditional Japanese earthquake resistant carpentry. They take it around local schools and let kids try assembling it by themselves in workshops.
They even provide a second model of a modern style timber frame construction, complete with metal plates and anchors. And of course, they stress test it: a simulated earthquake is easily done with a few eager volunteers doing their best to pull it down.
So if you have a small timber frame construction business anywhere in the world and want to do some long term marketing: build a model and take it around local schools. Or better yet, form a guild, pool resources to make a few models, and have a traveling exhibit.

In the late 19th c., after a visit to Paris, three local Haitian architects figured out how to build sustainable, earthquake and hurricane resistant wood and masonry houses. Known today by the clunky name "Le style gingerbread". Here a house in Port-au-Prince, 2017.
The style itself is absolutely inconsequential to the disaster resistant construction, but local patrons fell for the charming looks, reminding them of North American stick frame houses and French seaside resorts. Even when completely stripped nude, they remain charming.
The basic construction is exceedingly simple: a basic timber frame reinforced with diagonal braces, and walls infilled with absolutely anything: stone, mud, brick, wood, whatever was at hand when the house was built, it was all going to be covered in plaster anyway.

Growing up in the 90s, it was still a common enough sight to see coolies employed in railway stations to carry the heavy luggage on his shoulders up to the auto-rickshaw stand

Today in the Chennai station, I hardly found anyone hiring a coolie
Most people (including elderly people) are now OK with the idea of carrying the luggage themselves.

Not because they look forward to it more.

But because suitcases have wheels! Which they seldom did 20 years ago

(A microburst Twitter essay--to be finished before I'm done with my cough drop)

I just had an epiphany: #beautiful has become my new favorite word. That may seem strange given my circumstances. In June 2017 I was diagnosed with incurable stage IV #lungcancer.
I naively thought that maybe my lifetime of being a health and fitness junkie would insulate me from such a medical fate. Wrong. And So here I am, fifty-one years old and not sure how much time I have left on earth. I know I could, or maybe should, feel angry, cheated, jaded.
But I don't. I have this epiphany that my new favorite word is beautiful and I'm not sure why. There is nothing beautiful about what I've gone through since my diagnosis--lots of physical and emotional distress to be sure. But yet, I keep find

One of the most chilling abandoned places in the world is France's Red Zone, or "Zone Rouge".

Over 100 years ago, the First World War so devastated the landscape here that people are still forbidden to enter, & the zone has become a ghostly & overgrown place.
As the First World War drew to a close in 1918, Europe had to face the consequences of the most apocalyptic conflict ever seen.

18 million people were dead, while towns & cities lay in ruins. Disease & hunger ravaged the population.
For France and Belgium, the countries that hosted the war's main theatre, the Western Front, there was another consequence: large parts of the country were now uninhabitable wastes of shell-churned mud.

One of the most interesting places my ruins research has taken me is into the world of ancient Arabic poetry.

So here's the story of how a tiny fragment from the opening of ancient poems became one of the most enduring poetic tropes in history: that of "stopping by the ruins"
In Arabic literature, nothing is more redolent of loss & longing than the motif of wuquf 'ala al-atlal (الوقوف على الأطلال), stopping or standing by the ruins.

This beautiful motif originates in the pre-Islamic period, & occurs continuously in the history of Arabic poetry.
The motif sees a wandering Bedouin come across the ruin (atlal) of a campsite & become lost in memory.

The word wuquf / وقوف holds the double meaning of standing & stopping, so this portion of the poem usually forms a moment of stillness & meditation, outside of time.
