Finding myself wondering if the reaction to ROMA would be the same had it been directed by Alejandra Cuaron.

For the record, I am almost certain the answer is no, and that realization deeply disturbs me.
That shouldn’t take anything away from Cuaron or his film. It is - as many have said - a masterpiece. And it presents its characters with the love, affection, and humanity you’d expect given his relationship with them.
But I do think that it’s important that the industry takes a long hard look at itself in moments like this and asks whether we’re even capable of recognizing the films and filmmakers capable of ROMA (or who are already doing it) if they don’t present somewhat like Cuaron.
