Finding myself wondering if the reaction to ROMA would be the same had it been directed by Alejandra Cuaron.

It would deserve it, but would it?
For the record, I am almost certain the answer is no, and that realization deeply disturbs me.
That shouldn’t take anything away from Cuaron or his film. It is - as many have said - a masterpiece. And it presents its characters with the love, affection, and humanity you’d expect given his relationship with them.

This is the fundamental genius of Putin’s entire enterprise: Unwinding his now considerable influence over the American government requires Americans - and the political right in particular - to admit that they got beat, and taking the L is almost constitutionally unamerican.
And it is PARTICULARLY difficult for the right, much of whose political identity is founded on the idea of America as a perfect nation.
Those of us who know America’s imperfect history and have had to fight to participate in its full promise are far more dispositionally willing to acknowledge a national L when it happens and make changes so that it doesn’t happen again.

I met Shyla last year in a meeting. Her father had dreamt of making her a doctor. But his dreams drowned in the sewer he had died in. This is her story. (ruralindiaonline.org/articles/my-mo…)
Ten years later, Shyla is almost close to realising her father’s dream. She is doing her nursing course, and she needs help. As a society that sent her father down the sewers, I think it is our responsibility to see that she becomes a nurse.
When I met her again last month, Shyla was exuding confidence. “I will soon be a nurse and if you need anything, call me over” she told me and i cant wait.
Shyla’s course fee for third year comes close to Rs 1 lakh. I already have someone pledging Rs 10,000.

Some thoughts on today's @POTUS @ConteCheFaCose meeting @WhiteHouse today: 1) @realDonaldTrump may buck his summer summit (@g7 @NATO ) norm today and have a positive meeting with a European ally. The current US - Italy alliance dates back to 1944.
2) @ConteCheFaCose was elected backed by an anti-establishment and Far Right coalition. He’s a 53 year old lawyer, who like @realdonaldjstrump, has no previous political experience.
3) Unlike @POTUS he is inheriting an economy in disarray. Italy had 10.8% unemployment last year and the 3rd largest debt burden in the world. Growth is at about 1.5% and projected to decrease going forward.
