Activists on one side of road, gardaí on the other as eviction takes place of occupied building on Frederick Street in Dublin
Gardaí from the public order unit on the site. A few dozen activists also.
A number of individuals with their faces covered at the entrance to the building. They’re not in Garda uniforms. Four Garda vans on site though
Activists now chanting opposite the building as the door is boarded up on Frederick Street
“Our city,” the activists shout as the building door is boarded up
Getting a bit tense now between activists and police as the men who boarded up the house prepare to leave
Activists and police rushed to the corner of the street as the van went away. Gardaí getting a very hostile reception as they leave.
And now the activists are back at the site of the now boarded up building
They’re in full voice now.
And now they’re marching back towards O’Connell Street
“Whose streets? Our streets” is he chant as they walk along the road. Traffic held up behind.
Just at the Parnell statue atop O’Connell Street now
It’s still going strong as they march down the streets. Chants against Fianna Fáil and Leo Varadkar’s government as they go
As an aside. Lots of bemused tourists on O’Connell Street stopping wondering what’s going on.
The activists supporting the occupation on Fredrick street now at the Spire as they march through the city.
They’re almost at the ways now. But they now have turned aside and are now heading down Abbey Street
They’re urging others who support them to join the march
Still a large number of activists as they approach Store Street Garda Station and Busaras
Activists outside Store Street Garda Station now. “No justice, no peace” is the cry
Sizable crowd at Store Street came from Frederick Street
The crowd outside Store Street now chanting about the Garda public order unit, which had officers at the scene in Frederick Street
The group want to send a message to the activists they say were arrested and are being held inside Store Street
The crowd get roused with demands for those arrested to be released. They say housing has been “commodified”, and the government has failed. More occupations are coming, they say.
The crowd are still here and chanting away. Government, Fianna Fáil and Labour target of the ire. “Leo in your ivory tower, this is called people power,” is what they’re saying now.
“Let them go, let them go” is the chant from the crowd outside Store Street now. Story here: jrnl.ie/4230857
One of the activists is released. “This is the beginning of a movement,” he says.
Chanting again in earnest as the rain starts to pour. “Let them go, let them go”
Another of the activists leaves Store Street
Lot of anti-Garda sentiment here over what happened this evening.
Activists are critical of their arrest and repeat that its only the beginning and that there are other buildings that could be occupied.
Another describes his arrest and says that housing is in a state of crisis
Crowd has gotten slightly bigger since arrival at Store Street.
Updated piece now on @thejournal_ie. Spoke to Solidarity-PBP TD @bridsmithTD at the scene thejournal.ie/fredrick-stree…
