Pleasure to hear book talk with @AnandWrites on @winnerstakeall with Michael Sandel (though I wish Sandel had asked tougher questions)--I even got an autograph for my book 😀 - I do have 2 lingering thoughts/questions after the talk 1/7
First, one motivation of "market world" funders to avoid government is urgency- government is too slow & people will suffer if we don't act. I have been critical of this claim, but I also understand it. The blockages in current system (partisan, institutional) are enormous. 2/7
I don't just mean blockage to major federal legislation. Consider the array of institutional entities that can block efforts to address regional transit in Detroit- city, township, county governments- add toxic mix of racism and sprawl- it's a nightmare. 3/7
When I was in Detroit this summer- I heard a lot of market world thinking about transportation- subsidizing passes for Lyft, or creating ride share shuttles. It's absolutely maddening, but maybe not crazy in light of many decades of failure on regional transportation. 4/7
Second, I celebrate the idea that young, talented, motivated people should seek the public sector with idealism and energy (rather than McKinsey, etc.) I've also worked on this- leading @MSUInnovateGov program in Detroit with @joshsapotichne 5/7
We place undergrad interns in Detroit city and county governments and school district-they are idealistic, energetic, do real work. But work is often very tedious, discouraging. If they get jobs after internship, pay is low, work moves slowly b/c slow gov, etc. 6/7
To make these jobs more attractive compared to nonprofit/private alternatives (and not just something people do when they parachute in for "service") would require major investment in something people instinctively dislike--> government bureaucracy. 7/7
In other words- are we prepared to channel enthusiasm for change into necessary work of property tax assessments, bus route designs, government grant administration, cataloguing vacant property, etc? The work is out there to make gov work- it’s also long and laborious
