I was gonna add Galavant to our list of shows we killed even before we discovered they existed by liking them, but based on the second season so far, as my wife puts it, it should have been the first season plus an episode or two.
The second season is what happens when you start off a campaign with like four or five amazing adventures and you don't have any truly huge thing in the offing and suddenly everyone's just futzing around and so you have to launch a global cataclysm to keep interest up.
Also, I've come to the depressing realization, which my wife had long since reached WITHOUT TELLING ME that I have tastes in television not dissimilar to a TV critic, so that's one more subclass of Insecta to which I might reasonably be compared.
But man that first season.

"We have a moral duty to aid the weak and the oppressed." Compelling.

"We have no right to control our own borders if the right age-and-sex mix appears there." Self-evidently stupid and counterproductive.
Arguments are not won purely on merit, but on the manner in which they're proposed and argued.
This is especially true with matters in which the moving party seeks to have our laws, if not suspended, then at least highly-charitably enforced and interpreted: If you want to make a case that our immigration law as it exists is immoral, you can't simply hand-wave at it.

Being enamored of the way things were when you were young does not make you conservative; it makes you nostalgic.
Protesting one's conservatism has very little meaning if the substance of your protest is nostalgia and self-appellation.
Similarly, if the entirety of one's conservatism is a single policy stance, coupled with a congenital resistance to change, this merely makes one idiosyncratically intransigent.

Only occurs to me now that I'm looking at my list, but it's probably no coincidence all three of these shows have female showrunners/writers/leads. Women are just better at that stuff, don't @ me.
Also I'm gonna add @nbcbrooklyn99 to my list -- such a good-hearted show with, weirdly, one of the more affecting romantic subplots of any show this year. I would not have predicted that a line like "your butt is the bomb" would make me tear up!

Before becoming a broken country, it's clear to me that Iraq was a broken society. When did the Iraqi psyche break?
I've been thinking about this since someone added me to a closed group of Iraq experts. I've been silently observing conversations. So much conflict even among the experts, so many fights. The atmosphere is toxic.
Maybe it's not a very well managed or moderated group - maybe the founders didn't invest enough in setting the general acceptable tone. But also, maybe this just uncovers underlying tensions, which otherwise would be hidden behind civility

First attempt at a twitter thread, so here goes nothing (bare with me here):

This is Robert C. Allen's graphical representation of "Engels' Pause"--the existence of two-phase real wage growth in the UK during he Industrial Revolution.
As you can see, real wages are stagnant from the beginning of the IR to around 1835ish, most likely 1840 if we're talking about a real guarantee that wages are going to keep going up as opposed to down. For comparison's sake, the "Communist Manifesto" was published in 1848.
What's interesting--and what I don't think Allen gets into much in his analysis--is the startling correlation with wage growth and several key moments in the history of the Labour Movement in the UK, let alone the rest of the world. Here's what they are:

Before I lose the idea. R76 and wax museum challenge.
I'm thinking Jack as a journalist, challenged to do the "one night in a wax museum" thing. (Since he lost a bet in his journalist company).

His boss wants a segment of his experience or something so Jack takes a vid camera, sleeping bag, notebooks and some necessities
His bet requires him to set up in the 'murderers' section for maximum fear factor and what not. Jack admits he's a little scared cause everything looks so real.

One of the statues is a guy called Gabriel Reyes. The story was that he murdered people around the city.
