For me, the real issue in the #trans #GRA reform is #maleviolence against #female & trans. I note #transmen seem to be absent from discussion. They obvs don't present as #women so don't use women's spaces. But they can't draw attention to themselves as trans because... (1/2)
(2/2) in a male space they would run the risk of attack by men who would see their bodies as still female. I can't find stats on transmen being violent, or female violence on transmen. I guess there will be some, but very small no's. The problem is male violence. #patriarchy...
So we need to be looking at #male #violence and how/why our society raises #boys to think violence is a way of dealing with the world. NB I know this is a generalisation and not all males are violent & not all females are peaceful!
Sex is genetic & immutable ie if you produce eggs you're female, males have a y chromosome & produce sperm. Gender is a social construct. Perhaps if we didn't insist on confining humans to particular roles there would be no gender dysphoria & people would be happy in their skin.
Intersex does not mean there are other sexes. Some human characteristics eg height will follow a normal distribution curve but sex isn't one of them. Intersex conditions are an anomaly in the genome, a bit like people having different coloured eyes, webbing between their toes..
... Or an extra finger. It doesn't mean they're less human!! They will still be genetically either male or female, but some may not be able to reproduce because of the way their chromosomal anomalies manifest physically. They are not an extra sex. Mammals, including humans, are..
... Sexually dimorphic ie you need a male and a female to make a baby. You can transition to change your gender but you can't change your sex. If you are male, every cell in your body, not just sperm, will contain a y gene. It's just not switched on in eg eye cells as only the..
.. #genes for eye cells are switched on in eyes. So a #male will always be male & a #female will always be female, whichever gender they present as. Since #women (#biological) are historically oppressed by virtue of their biology, ie physically weaker, vulnerable due to...
... pregnancy, childbirth & breastfeeding, childcare responsibilities (hormonal bonding for preservation of the species) & this still occurs today, this is why the sex class of female needs to be a protected characteristic. Culturally, females need male-free spaces...
... where they can feel safe to share their experiences and be free from male-bodied people. Especially for women #survivors of abuse. #transwomen do not have the same sex-class experience. They are brought up as boys & males own public space in a way females don't. They will...
... have had their own bad experiences based on eejits discerning their difference, but that's not based on sex. Sadly this means transwomen are adversely affected by their own sex-class's propensity to violence. But the answer is not to attack #feminism or female-only spaces...
Ask yourselves, "Why aren't transwomen attacking male violence?" It's because women and feminism are easier targets than trying to dismantle patriarchy!
Until there is some way of distinguishing between genuine transwomen (used to be called transsexuals) & men wanting to self-id as women for more nefarious reasons (access to vulnerable women; see also #autogynephilia) then women-only spaces & services should remain female only.
Well, that turned out to be a bit longer than the two tweets I originally had in mind!
