Lots on leadership atm. My views on leadership are quite simple:
Leadership is about people, not egos. Things cease to be about you but the decisions you make have a massive impact on many people. In a school context a community.
Have a really clear vision for where you want to be but use the current context to inform decision making. Know what it is that you want.
Taking 24 hours to sleep on something is not a sign of weakness nor is showing compassion, flexibility or empathy to the people you work with.
Be visible, a presence, around. This reassured others, even if you are “just there.”
Don’t make knee jerk reactions, don’t bring your own issues into work and allow them to temper your mood. The mood of the building is often set by you.
A key piece of advice I gave someone once was “trust your team.” The moment you don’t it is game over. Empower your team, allow them to run with things and allow them to make mistakes.
If you make a mistake, so be it. Be humble about it, in time laugh about it. BUT make sure you rectify it and move on. Nobody is perfect.
It is not a sign of weakness to say I’m not sure or I don’t know or I need to consider that.
Sometimes the hardest thing to do is to do nothing; to take your time and hold your nerve. Sometimes the right thing to do is exactly the reverse of what everyone else thinks you should do.
Keep in your mind that you cannot always please everyone.
Ensure you speak to people directly as much as possible. Email, whilst it can be efficient, is a dire form of communication.
Make sure you go into people’s classes daily and ask if they are okay and all is well.
Remember that other people may have a valid point of view.
Remember that an idea you generated may have taken months of thought so don’t expect people to instantly get it. This is where time and communication are key.
Hold your nerve if something doesn’t appear to work at first. It is likely to be a knee jerk back as it’s something new.
Above all, be you. Don’t put on an act.
When people make mistakes don’t attack them for it. Think why. Think about what caused that, remember what it was like when you were doing their job.
