The planetary crisis is a crisis *because* it is a discontinuity.

This complete break with the past defines our era.

I believe this is by far the most important thing humanity should work to understand, because this rupture itself dwarfs all other human challenges.
Very little—maybe none—of the expertise + experience acquired before this discontinuity can be usefully applied now that it's unfolding, unless it incorporates the fact of discontinuity into its core assumptions.

Much refusal to see discontinuity stems from sunk-cost expertise.
Much refusal to see discontinuity stems as well from outright predatory delay.

Good people can only justify participation in predatory delay by assuring themselves that status quo will have enduring value into the future... there must be continuity.
