Much of my life has been defined by drifters -- substitute geometry teacher, chemistry teacher replacing the one on sabbatical, coaches filling slots no one wanted, people who aren't supposed to be there but are when you need them to define you.

One year in middle school, our field hockey coach was a girl taking a year off of grad school. She was drifting, no idea what to do, had had her heart broken. There were stories you could see but didn't know.

...Which we listened to in her station wagon on the way to our hockey games. Her taste in music shaped mine for the next decade. There are songs I can't listen to -- "Here's Where the Story Ends" -- without being transported to that car, & being 13, & all the related turmoil.

Since my uber driver is taking the stupidest possible route to my house, I'm listening to stuff that reminds me of her in the back of the car, and looking out the window at this city I used to love, and now dread.
