Here are the three lanes that were shut down at the San Ysidro port of entry in TJ today in anticipation of the caravan. There are seven US army members here with CBP at the moment. Story with @Haleaziz on this buzzfeed.com/hamedaleaziz/t…
Not sure why the US is putting these up here. Last time the caravan went to the pedestrian walkway across the way to ask for asylum.
Maria Jimenez, 40, goes through the port of entry here in Tijuana twice a week. She brings her son to Mexico to play soccer and said that her wait time today doubled to three hours from the 1.5 hours it normally takes to cross at this time.
I asked Rita Moneres, 64, who lives in Baja California and brings rescue animals to San Diego, said the three lane closures at San Ysidro have been a “pain in the ass.”

Statement from @JoaquinCastrotx on the death of Felipe Alonzo-Gomez, the 8 yr old who died last night in CBP custody.

“Many questions remain unanswered, including how many children have died in CBP custody.”
An official with knowledge of Felipe’s death told me the 8 yr old had been detained by CBP for a whole week before he died. He and his father were detained since Dec. 18 after crossing into the US in El Paso, Texas.

Nielsen said unaccompanied children will be exempt from US plan to force asylum seekers along the southern border to remain in Mexico while their immigration case are processed.
"The goal is to protect those who seek asylum, it cannot be the way we do that is we force them to pay a smuggler trafficker and put themselves at risk," @SecNielsen.

SAN DIEGO – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials temporarily suspended all northbound and southbound crossings for both pedestrians and vehicles at the San Ysidro port of entry at about 11:30 a.m. Sunday morning. As of 2 p.m., operations have not resumed.
In preparation for multiple planned demonstrations on both sides of the border, CBP had deployed additional personnel to the San Ysidro port of entry on Sunday.
