So let's unpack this contemptible, fact-free, and wholly incendiary column by @DavidAFrench. First there is no evidence of a "white-supremacy surge" and French must know this because he offers little but anecdotal incidents to prove his case. 1/ nationalreview.com/magazine/2018/…
Here's the "study" French cites.
Not only does it offer no data to show a surge in white supremacy, whites are the 3rd most targeted group after blacks and LGBT. Jews, Latinos and Muslims fare better. (The 2 authors also blame Russians for inciting hate.)

Further, the study says that based on early reporting from these major cities "we are forecasting a significant national decrease in 2018" for the 1st half of the year. So no surge? Thanks, Trump? (Page 9)

French claims "alt-right figures and outright racists keep turning up in Republican politics." He then names a handful - Paul Nehlen and Corey Stewart, who lost. He then rants about Steve King and demands he be sanctioned by the House. (For what specific crime is unclear.)
This hardly constitutes a widespread problem in the GOP, especially considering the anti-Semitic remarks and anti-white remarks coming from the Left.

He then ties the alt-Right to anyone who has a MAGA hat - and says Trumps words (he doesn't specify) embolden supremacists.
French then pivots to a study he doesn't link to that claims Trump voters who go to church less (?) say being white is very important to their identity and only half had "warm feelings" for blacks. (Sounds really sciency). Identity politics, loss of faith and Trump...
Are causing this imaginary surge. Then this gem: "If the ethos of the Right is never, ever accesss to either a leftist or an elite conservative critique, then it's easy to see how bigots can flourish." In other words, if you don't stop fighting the Left...
And give equal time to bashing your own side, even if you have to make up shit, then you're a closet bigot or at least fueling bigotry. "The online Right should decline to practice mindless opposition and petty trolling..." Yes surrender to the voices on the Left. Great idea!
This is a vicious, baseless attack on Trump supporters, and something I'd expect to read in the NYT or Vox or Mother Jones. It is profoundly disappointing to see this published at NRO.

French claims manufacturing has not disappeared in a generation. But the article HE CITES touts manufacturing gains (under Trump) for the 1st time in 13 years. Further, the article says the sector is at an all-time low, from 28% in 1953 to 11.6% in 2017.

His claim that marijuana use among our youth is on a slight uptick and nothing to worry about is laughable on its face. The chart he cites shows a major rise since the 1990s - and even this is sketchy because self-reporting studies are dubious at best

I also am repulsed by the fact that it is difficult to differentiate between those who are overt white supremacists in power and those who are merely covertly propping it up.
For the record: I clerked with John Bash at SCOTUS. I met his wife at a friend’s wedding. She seemed very nice.

But you work for this administration, and the only question I have is what stripes your white supremacy takes.
I do not know the exact answer to that question, but fuck civility just because I know you.

#Fact 1 - The Wage Gap is real. People who says it's not haven't read the data.

However, in places like the USA, the wage gap is *not* mostly due to sexism like many #femnist #WomenInScience are claiming it is today. Disparate outcomes doesn't imply disparate treatment.
Women typically choose fields that are lower paying; even in the #STEM fields. To attribute that to sexism only or even mostly is a very dishonest way of deriving an answer for this complex disparity.
