Interesting story about Facebook and the media here: motherjones.com/media/2018/12/…
I didn't follow this story at all, but it seems important.

As near as I can tell, a bunch of media sites got really excited because Facebook news feed started giving them a ton of traffic. But they didn't realize that Facebook would keep all the ad revenue for itself.
So a ton of media websites crammed into the space, generating clickbait to optimize for FB newsfeed, intoxicated with all the traffic FB was sending their way. But traffic wasn't matched by money, so the space got massively overcrowded.
That was always going to cause a big shakeout and consolidation among media sites. But then Facebook nuked newsfeed in order to minimize bad publicity over the 2016 election and the fake news controversy. So the slow consolidation turned into total carnage.
So basically there's a big excess of media websites and a bunch are going to either die, shrink, or be forced to become nonprofits living on donations.

Is that about the size of it?
