does anyone want an essay about Paddington that is 18 months overdue from any kind of relevance
the pleasure of PADDINGTON films is its formal delight: its micro scenes of broad slapstick & fussy, detailed Rube Goldberg machines and pop-up books enact its macro message: that the world’s chaos and cruelties are governed by an engine chugging towards unseen kindness and grace
a bear falling thru space will be met with all sort of felicities and miracles bc the world only needs us to trust it is miraculous
fall from a ledge, leave a sock in a laundry, accidentally jam a sandwich in a criminal’s face; they only appear tragic bc our view is too pessimistic and small

but if you are kind and polite, the world will be right
“They will not have forgotten how to treat strangers.” Paddington’s ethic is also true of its universe; every calamity has, in the fullness of time, a soft landing.
Oh this is excellent; Barthes is such a smart critic turn to to read Paddington.
