All right, friends, gather 'round. Let's talk about how you define success as an author and whether or not you'll reach it with your sanity still intact. 1/10
One thing they don't always tell you about the author game is that it doesn't get much easier, no matter how many career milestones you hit along the way. 2/10
Usually, by the time you reach a goalpost, you're already looking for the next one. You got a request but you want to land the agent. You're repped but need that book deal. 3/10
Four books and several years into this industry, I can tell you that getting over any one hurdle only means you have new hurdles to face. Tougher hurdles, too. 4/10
If you manage to land a book deal, you'll spend a huge amount of time and energy promoting that book and fighting for eyeballs in a very crowded marketplace. 5/10
While dealing with edits, copy edits, advance reviews, and launch promo, you'll be expected to write another book on a much shorter timetable than you previously enjoyed. 6/10
Many factors governing how your books perform are decided by your publisher: book format, price, marketing support, cover design, distribution, release date. 7/10
Other factors that influence book performance (i.e. sales) are beyond even their control. Trade reviews. Market trends. Awards. Visibility algorithms. 8/10
Most of these things are out of your control, but they'll affect you. Not just financially, but emotionally. This is why you need a support network. 9/10
Make friends. Support their struggles and share your own. The only way to succeed is to keep going, and friends make it much, much easier to do. 10/10
