This got a lot of attention. Ibwould like tonpoint out that it is in no way a special family story. "The Nazis" where not some alien group, but a large part of German society. The SS had more than 400.000 members. Progromes were public.
The Wehrmacht was not some pure military misused by the Nazis. It became an integral and active part of the crimes of the Holocaust. And there were a LOT of soldiers in it. Wehrmacht soldiers more likely than not knew or took part in war crimes. Especially on the Eastern Front
Going through Germany today you will find little golden cobblestones inscribed with names, date of deportation, date/location of death. Called "Stolpersteine" - stumbling stones - they commemorate the victims. There are a LOT of them. No-one should believe people didn't know.
They stopped caring. It's a process. And it starts with small stuff and escalates fast. Dehumanizing immigrants and asylum seekers. That's such a small step. Doesn't make everybody opposed to immigration a Nazi.
But it implies a certain responsibility to counter the right wing use of that argument and an acceptance that the risk of such usage exists.
