1/3: My parents’ story is the story of #WorkingFamilies in #CA34 and across America.

They worked night and day to provide for their kids — w/ no guarantee of a dignified retirement.

Joined my @WaysMeansCmte colleagues today for hearings on how we’ll improve #RetirementSecurity.
2/3: I wanted to know what kind of impact raising the #MinimumWage would have on the savings ability of women, #PeopleOfColor, and low-income Americans.

Nancy Altman, President of @SSWorks said:

Raising the wage is a “winning strategy, one where EVERYONE would be better off.”
3/3: Women have made gains in the workplace, but there’s still an #IncomeGap we need to bridge — especially for women of color.

According to Nancy Altman of @SSWorks, we can achieve this if we:

🔹 #RaiseTheWage

🔹 Strengthen #CollectiveBargaining

🔹 Expand #SocialSecurity

Over 27,000 TPS holders in LA worked on the frontlines of the pandemic to keep our city running.

With TPS protections set to expire, we cannot wait to act. Today, I joined @Carecen_LA @TPS_Alliance to call on @POTUS to protect millions of #TPS holders who call our country home. ImageImageImageImage
Our country has a moral obligation to help people fleeing violence & persecution in other countries.

The Biden administration must redesignate TPS protections for recipients from El Salvador, Honduras, Nepal, Nicaragua, and Haiti. 2/4
I also urge the Administration to address the backlog of TPS designations for Black-majority countries — including Cameroon and Mauritania. 3/4

Congressman John Lewis was a man of immeasurable character, a civil rights icon who amplified the collective voices of a nation throughout his lifetime. His commitment to dismantle hatred and oppression in all its forms inspired generations...(1/4)
...and it was his shoulders we stood on in our fight for justice. His strength and resolve, showcased during the Nashville sit-in movement, the Freedom Rides, and the March on Washington, gave us the momentum to carry on and taught us the fortune of “good trouble.” (2/4)
Those of us who knew John Lewis and marched with him — whether to protest the detention of immigrant children or speak out against racial injustice — looked to him as a light for future generations. I am humbled to have served alongside him, the “Conscience of the Congress” (3/4)

On this historic day for #LGBTQ rights in our country, I’m going to #ShareTheMic with my brother Gerry:

The #SCOTUS ruling that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 provides workplace protections to #LGBTQ folks is a monumental move toward #EqualityForAll in America. (1/4)
#ShareTheMic

Personally, as a gay man working in education, I’m reminded of the work done by Harvey Milk and his allies in defeating the Briggs Initiative that would have banned lesbian and gay teachers and their open supporters from teaching in public schools. (2/4)
#ShareTheMic

With this ruling, #SCOTUS reaffirms what the majority of California voters passed 42 years ago. This is a huge victory for #LGBTQ folks in all professions. (3/4)

#COVID19 has created new & complex obstacles in securing a #2020Census where EVERYONE is counted.

As @OversightDems Vice Chair, I recognize that states like California need certainty & there’s no time to waste.

That’s why I introduced the Fair & Accurate Census Act. ⬇️
It should be a no-brainer for @HouseGOP & @WhiteHouse to support seeing as @SecretaryRoss asked Congress to delay deadlines.

The Fair & Accurate Census Act extends key data collection deadlines & allows @uscensusbureau flexibility to keep their field staff safe & healthy. ⬇️ Image
This bill also requires @OversightDems to be updated monthly by the @uscensusbureau.

This transparency will help Congress maintain oversight, support the needs of field staff & increase the resources necessary for an accurate count where EVERYONE is represented & has a voice. ⬇️ Image
