Two facts come to mind when I reflect on #LaborDay2020. 1st, I can't help but think abt the Imperial Foods workplace tragedy that befell friends & neighbors in my @CityofHamlet hometown in 1991. (1/6) #ncpol @RaleighReporter @jimmorrill @NCCapitol @PFFPNC

2nd, also wearing my Insurance Commissioner hat, I reflect upon what #LaborDay is about & all the rights + benefits for most workers that were gained only by the blood, sweat, tears, and even lives of workers past. (3/6)

@davidsirota It's important to point out that austerity is part of a game our two political parties play with one another as part of the 40+ year class war by the rich and corporations against the 99%

Here's how the game works...
@davidsirota When a Republican becomes president, we are told deficits don't matter. They then, with the help of Democrats, pass tax cuts, bailouts, etc., all of which create a massive transfer of wealth from the bottom to the top 1%. The deficit and debt skyrocket...
@davidsirota We are told that important social programs that benefit the poor and working class must be cut because of our debt and deficit.

This sets the stage for round 2 of the austerity game. Can you guess what that is, children?

Instead of reducing the $19.9T debt he inherited to zero like he promised, #LyingTrump’s policies ballooned the deficit and sent the debt soaring to $24T in his first 3 years. The #TrumpCrash of 2020 exploded the debt further, to the current $26.5T. (3/10)

@bennessb Yes it is. Inaccuracies and flat out lies. As a ChronicLyme/PTLDS patient who's been denied testing, treatment, & support for over 20 yrs this is a painful topic. They are still using the SAME flawed testing that missed my dx in 1993. The ELISA that misses around 50% of cases.
@bennessb I fucking hate the CDC for what they've done to me & my fellow Lyme warriors. Drs run out of business. Some that we travel to see across more than 3 or 5 state lines bc they actually were helping & took insurance. Sorry. I want to burn things down when i think of the yrs stolen.
@bennessb We've been trying to get actual patients & Lyme literate drs on the CDC panel that makes the treating guidelines for over 10 yrs. We still can't be heard. We still can't sit at the table. It's maddening.

Putting on my former legal aid lawyer hat for a sec to explain why it’s so important that we temporarily halt “continuing disability reviews” for #SocialSecurity disability benefits as part of #coronavirus response (as @mattbc & I have been urging).

thread:
@mattbc For people who rely on SSDI or SSI benefits, continuing disability reviews (CDRs) are periodic fire-drills that generally require not just lots of paperwork, but also multiple dr visits, trips to the #SocialSecurity office, and in many cases, visits to SSA consulting docs.

2/
@mattbc The bottom line: Continuing with CDRs as scheduled right now would make it impossible for SSI & SSDI beneficiaries to observe the #coronavirus social distancing protocols urged by the CDC and public health experts at this critical time.

Outrage over @POTUS Trump's violation of norms, principles, and laws has tended to mask actions his Administration is taking that hurts a large swath of his base. Let's stop reacting to all @realDonaldTrump's #bull$hit and start tweeting about issues:
#Healthcare: Trump has tried since election to trash #AffordableCareAct (b/c it's called "Obamacare"), joining Republican states in suing to overturn ACA, doing away with protection for #Pre_existingConditions. Trump budget cuts Medicaid and ACA subsidies by a trillion dollars.
Trump also wants to cut #SNAP once again calling for reductions in the number of adults who can qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The 2021 budget proposes cutting SNAP funding by about $15 billion from last year. nytimes.com/2020/02/10/us/…

- A family devastated by #StochasticTerrorism
- A child whose family lost #FoodStamps (1/5)
- A senior whose #SocialSecurity disability benefits have been cut
- A #Kentucky coal miner whose mine shut down

#Thread: After @EliseStefanik’s national meltdown many of you joined #TeamTedra, because you know that her partisan theatrics are bad for the country.

But today I want to tell you about the things Stefanik has done to hurt #NY21 families.
Despite her campaign promises to improve #healthcare for Northern New Yorkers; @EliseStefanik voted to kick 64,000 of us (my family included) off their insurance.

She voted to gut protections for people with pre-existing conditions.

She voted to make RX drugs more expensive.
.@EliseStefanik voted to cut hundreds of billions of dollars from Medicare and Social Security.

In 2012 she chaired the @GOP platform committee and wrote the plan to privatize #SocialSecurity and turn #Medicare into a voucher program.

Don't get mislead by the negative and false propaganda uttered by politicians and the media around Social Security. The program has a cumulative surplus of $2.9T and is fully funded until 2035 and 93% funded for the next 25 years. Yes, there is a funding issue but a passage of
The Social Security 2100 Act will put Social Security back into balance over the next 75 years. The cost? Raising payroll taxes by one-tenth of 1% per year and adding new payroll taxes to wages over $400K plus. As @peter_arno stated, "Social Security is the most successful
anti-poverty policy in the history of the United States. And this is not true just for seniors, but across the entire life cycle and the entire population. It reduces more poverty for children than any other policy, more poverty for working adults and more poverty for seniors.

I’ve observed Colorado @SenCoryGardner since his election. What I’ve seen has left me dismayed. Rather than building bipartisan bridges to get things done, Cory became a supine Trump yes-man. There are 1000s reasons he shouldn’t be re-elected. Here are 101: #VoteCoryOut #COsen
#1: Even though he was elected by the narrowest of margins in 2014 in a state that has since voted for Hillary in 2016 & a democratic state govt trifecta in 2018, Cory continues to act as if he has a mandate from the white nationalist alt-right. #VoteCoryOut #cosen
#2: Cory Gardner has consistently voted for the extreme Trump agenda. During the 2019-2020 Congress, he’s voted with Trump over 90% of the time. During Trump’s 1st two years, Cory’s voting record was over 95% in line with Trump. #VoteCoryOut #cosen

Twitter, I see you're getting to know Chip Roy, the House Republican who just blocked the disaster aid package on the House floor. Here's a little introduction from someone (me) who ran as a Democrat in that seat last year. washingtonpost.com/business/econo… #tx21 1/7
Chip was the ghostwriter for Rick Perry's " Fed Up!" in which they said "Social Security is something we have been forced to accept for more than 70 years now...at the expense of respect for the Constitution" and that "By any measure, Social Security is a failure." #tx21 2/7
Last cycle, when asked at a conservative confab whether veterans benefits qualified as a "core government function," Chip refused to say yes, and instead offered the same anti-government rhethoric that he uses when talking about repealing the ACA. 3/7

@realDonaldTrump Crazy?
You also say Dems are "for crime," & "high taxes." THAT'S crazy. They're for border security THAT WORKS, & a FAIR taxation system.

Here's an Iowan who thinks you're wrong to say we're 'full.' Across Iowa and rural America, we need immigrants.

@realDonaldTrump Here's what's crazy.

Experts say 1.1 million fewer people in the U.S. have #health coverage due to efforts to undermine the #ACA through the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017.

Hopefully voters will see the light before 2020.

@realDonaldTrump Here's what's crazy.
You said you wouldn't touch #SocialSecurity, #Medicaid, or #Medicare, but your 2020 budget proposal cuts all 3.

Your YUGE deficit gives an EXCUSE for what GOP has wanted to do all along - cut what they like to call "entitlements."

This Republican, who voted for deficits that lined the pockets of the richest people in this country, wants the Senate to VOTE to affirm that restructuring those deficits to serve the broad majority is too dangerous. perdue.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/…
#MMT poses an enormous threat to those who wish to justify cuts to programs like #SocialSecurity or deny resources to a #GreenNewDeal on the basis of a phony debt crisis. They *need* The Deficit Myth. We want a better debate, one centered on our real resource constraints.

It’s #SocialSecurity Trustees Report Day!!! 1/ ssa.gov/oact/TR/2019/i…
Before we get started, let’s clear something up: Take today’s headlines with a big old grain of salt, because #SocialSecurity is not “going broke,” “bankrupt,” “running dry,” or otherwise headed for the graveyard. 2/ h/t @WalterJGottlieb: ncpssm.org/entitledtoknow…
The Trustees Report tells us about the current status of #SocialSecurity’s trust funds--i.e., its rainy-day account. Social Security taps into the trust fund reserves to pay benefits when our contributions fall short of the full cost of the program. 3/ cbpp.org/research/socia…
