As an experiment, I tried going for a few days without using social media at all. I expected something dramatic to happen as a result, owing to the burgeoning genre of essays about the liberating effect of switching off Facebook and Twitter.
But nothing really happened. I immediately found other dumb ways to entertain myself. I organized my closet, re-wrapped the twine around the legs of all my cat trees, and read a few books. I had no special sense of anything being particularly different.
I suppose my attention span and my capacity for amusing myself were shaped in the pre-Internet era. It seems easy enough for me to revert to the factory settings.

So I brought the experiment to an end.
