Maybe some of the mainstream journalists who deem Bellingcat reliable would like to answer Piers' question? I have my own answer, but I'd be interested in hearing what the people who reference our work actually think.
@PiersRobinson1 As you asked, I expect it's because I've spent 7 years building a reputation among mainstream journalists (and others) for producing reliable and transparent work, both individual and through Bellingcat.
In addition, I've spent a lot of time giving talks at human rights and journalism conferences, trained hundreds of journalists, NGOs workers, activists, and other people from a wide range of backgrounds in 5 day workshops where our methodology is clearly demonstrated.
We've also had organisations like the Joint Investigation Team into MH17, the OPCW FFM, OPCW-UN JIM, OHCHR COI on Syria, and many others, come to the same conclusions we did through our open source investigations.
I could go on, but it mainly comes down to putting the effort into building a reputation through openly sharing our knowledge, methodologies, and experience, and being part of a growing community of open source investigators from a variety of fields.
