As writers and commmentators, not as the editor overseeing political coverage. Certainly not as their first ever job in journalism.
Can anyone think of a previous instance where a major news outlet hired a partisan operative with no journalism background directly into an editorial role supervising straight news coverage? I can’t.
Apparently someone else could! Still a bad idea.

Sort of tangential, but there’s a riff from Zizek somewhere that I like to the effect that moderns always imagine they invented ironic distance & so misread older works as much more straightforward & ingenuous than they really are.
Machiavelli’s Prince is an extreme example. Many 18th c. commenters read it as satire, but today I get the impression it’s often taught without even raising the possibility of an ironic or critical subtext.
(That’s not to say it’s right to read it as a pure spoof either, but my god, there are some winks in there you have to almost willfully refuse to notice.)

None of these things are “emergencies.” They are very serious problems. An emergency is something that arises suddenly and unexpectedly; it’s not just a way of emphasizing that you think a problem is really bad.
Here’s the Congressional Research Service from 2007 on what constitutes an “emergency.” fas.org/sgp/crs/natsec…
A whole lot of responses to this along the lines of “but the problem is REALLY BAD.” Which it may be. But something can be really bad without being an emergency. Using the word just to signal that you take a problem seriously is unhelpful.

Two months ago, the Daily Caller published a pretty definitive report showing Jerome Corsi helped defraud his audience out of $25,000 to help a phony cancer patient get treatment from a nonexistent doctor. Have any authorities looked into this yet? dailycaller.com/2018/12/13/cor…
Like, it’s not a complicated case. The doctor doesn’t exist. The supposed “patient” registered the fake website for the doctor’s nonexistent clinic. Corsi claimed the imaginary doctor was a miracle worker who had treated a family member. Corsi’s listeners coughed up $25,000.
The press has basically done all the work here. All some prosecutor has to do is find the “patient” and mop up.

The article itself says that they don't know if these accounts are unwitting participants or part of a foreign influence campaign, based on "proprietary research" yet names 200 of them in that hyperlink anyways. There is a huge censorship battle coming for the 2020 elections

The answer to who called the press "forces of evil" and said it undermined the safety and security of the nation is: Egyptian President el-Sisi. But it sounds similar to Trump's words, right?
Next, the answer to who said that any press critical of the military or the police should be considered treason, rather than an expression of opinion is: Egyptian President el-Sisi. But again, sounds familiar, right?

For the third one, the majority got this one right. The answer to who called the press "dangerous and sick" and said they "could cause war" is: Trump.

In 2016, MSM obsessively covered @HillaryClinton emails, while ignoring the far-more-important story of #FBI investigation of the Trump campaign. This failure had a major impact on the election's outcome. My analysis is shaped by experience in both in #journalism and politics:
We're seeing exactly the same dynamic in the 2020 campaign that we saw in 2016: MSM is focusing on horserace issues & GOP talking points, rather than delving into SUBSTANTIVE differences between the candidates. This could determine outcome of Dem primaries-- & general election.

Would be interested in hearing about status of local journalists working for foreign media bureaus elsewhere. I heard the situation isn't very good in Iraq, but I'm ignorant about what's happening outside China.
From Yajun in the piece: "Chinese news assistants perform a job that is not well known by the public. Due to language barriers and official hurdles, many correspondents rely on their news assistants for story ideas, finding interviewees, translation and research."
