Thanks, @baltimoresun for the coverage! However, there are a few errors in your presentation. First, it's not the city that *has* to deal with over 700,000 tons of trash. Once Wheelabrator goes away, some 250K of that no longer gets trucked into the city. baltimoresun.com/news/opinion/e…
Next, the organization's name is Energy Justice Network, not "Energy For Justice." Third, at least 75% of what we dispose of recyclable or compostable, but that is not mentioned. Fourth, replacement facilities are CHEAPER than any retrofits Wheelabrator would do comply.
A mixed material recovery facility (MRF) set to go online in MA this year can handle around 2.4 times the amount of material DPW handles each year, or 730K tons. Its cost? $40 million. wastedive.com/news/zero-wast… We budget around $10-$11 mil. annually to burn up to 200K tons.
@baltimoresun - DPW's FY18 budget was $856.8 mil, with only 4.65% of that going toward waste management. The money's there, and a mandate like the BCAA forces the issue. We couldn't wait until Dec. for a company with little experience in zero waste to let us know what to do.
At that point, we'd have two years left in the city's contract with NMWDA, which would mean we wasted all of 2019 waiting on a report when we could've been proactive. And when was the last time Baltimore was proactive about something?
Initial expansion of QRL (also not mentioned) would cost $56 mil. We have a great opportunity here, and it's not the most helpful if we don't comment on the affordability of not using the incinerator as our primary source of waste disposal. #NoBurn @wbaltv11 @BaltimoreBrew.
