Massachusetts has the 4th, 7th, 9th, and 10th ranked private universities in terms of endowment per student. Public higher ed funding is in the bottom 10% on a per student basis. And so UMass is desperate. They need help. insidehighered.com/blogs/just-vis…
That's Harvard, Amherst, Williams, and MIT, and they could survive nicely without the lavish tax subsidies they receive from the government. Massachusetts more than any other state could benefit from reconsidering how favorably these schools are treated.
Harvard, Amherst, Williams, and MIT are not going to leave Massachusetts for other states if they have a slightly less advantageous deal than has been historically true. Those schools will also benefit from a healthy public higher ed ecosystem.

I've heard profs say things like, "this may be the only time they have to read Shakespeare," which is admitting defeat beforehand and making one's goals too narrow. Bigger Q. is how to get students so they want to read more after class is over. (Shakespeare or otherwise)
I've been guilty of underestimating student curiosity and seeing content as necessary medicine, rather than focusing on the course as an introduction and invitation to the field in the hopes they'll want to drink deeper in the future.

Re: Academic blogging, it helps not to think of it as a means to a larger end. While blogging has opened up some opportunities for me, the greatest benefit has been to my own teaching and writing practices. It's a tool to help me figure out what I think & believe.
Also extracting and emphasizing this from @deandad. The internet exists as an attention economy, but writing to draw attention exhausts its fuel very quickly and always winds up in a dead end. Every writer is a "unique intelligence." Write from that unique intelligence.

One of the moments of epiphany in my teaching was when a college sophomore openly longed for retirement so she could finally start to pursue the things she wanted to do with her life. Wrote about it in Why They Can't Write.
The solution to "senioritis" isn't to encourage students to suddenly start living once they've secured college acceptance. We can obviate senioritis by giving students freedom and agency throughout their schooling.

1. Good brief thread on the difference between Canadian and USA higher ed. To which a little more can be said.
2. The biggest difference between Canadian & USA higher ed is that Canada has many fewer schools and they are roughly equal in quality. You can get an equivalent education almost anywhere. In USA, divide between Harvard and, say, Bob Jones U. is huge.
3. Relatedly, in Canada frat/sorority system is weak. U of Toronto had frats but I din't know anyone who went to one. And athletics is minor. When I was there, Toronto football got, at best, an audience of few thousands

Zimmerman--and others who write these coddled-snowflakes-threaten-my-free-speech pieces--uses the "slippery slope" argument, arguing that taking down Silent Sam, for example, is tantamount to historical erasure, like getting rid of "historical remnants".
3. But Zimmerman's already pulling a sleight-of-hand here. Silent Sam is not a "historical remnant." The statue of Davis at UT is not a "historical remnant." They are monuments, occupying prominent and privileged spaces at these institutions.
