Massachusetts has the 4th, 7th, 9th, and 10th ranked private universities in terms of endowment per student. Public higher ed funding is in the bottom 10% on a per student basis. And so UMass is desperate. They need help. insidehighered.com/blogs/just-vis…
That's Harvard, Amherst, Williams, and MIT, and they could survive nicely without the lavish tax subsidies they receive from the government. Massachusetts more than any other state could benefit from reconsidering how favorably these schools are treated.
Harvard, Amherst, Williams, and MIT are not going to leave Massachusetts for other states if they have a slightly less advantageous deal than has been historically true. Those schools will also benefit from a healthy public higher ed ecosystem.
