Reading is like broccoli! What?! We know broccoli, and reading, is good for you but we don't always make time for it. Great analogy!
Radio (self) talk: This can happen with books, in the car, while grocery shopping, at grandma's house...Talk about what is happening! "Wow! Look at that silly cat on the cover! I can't wait to read this book." "Look at that house with the bright purple door. That is different!"
Auditory First: Before letting your child see the cover of a book, you make a big deal about something on the cover and "tease" her with what is to come. This makes the child use her listening skills. (This would work for signing kids, too.)
Auditory Bombardment: Pick a word or concept and talk about that word in multiple ways throughout your book. Her example-You are going camping, so get a book about camping. Look at the red tent. That tent is near the water. We are going to find a campground with lots of tents...
Sabotage: This is not as mean as it sounds! It is a form of harmless "tricking" your child to help them participate and USE THEIR WORDS! (Again, or ASL.) Example: (The cat is climbing a tree.) You say, "That cat is riding a bike! Is that cat riding a bike?"
Auditory Closure: This works best with repetitive texts. Brown Bear, Brown Bear is the first to come to my mind. After several pages, you can use some wait time after you say "Green frog, green frog...what do you _______." Hopefully, your child will yell SEE!
Expansion: Your child says 1-2 words and you expand their concept. Child: Bear! You: That's right! That's a really big brown bear standing over there. It walks on two feet just like us. I wonder if it is looking for a stream for some fish.
Acoustic Highlighting: Pick the target word and change the tone of your voice. Say the word 'loud' very loudly. Read the action verbs in a sing-songy voice.
Wait Time: After you ask your child a question, count to 10 to allow them time to process and respond.
Ask Questions: Use the phrase "Tell me or tell me more about ____." Ask simple (for young kids) WH questions like who, what, where and why.
How to choose a book: Make this FUN! Find books that your child loves. Tou the reader needs to make a big deal about all the books to keep reading as an enjoyable activity.
Ooh! Someone asked about books for older kids with a younger developmental age...The presenter said "The Book with no Pictures" and has a list that will be sent to participants!
And, the webinar is completed. Great information. Thanks, @InfantHearing
