April is #AutismAwarenessMonth
Everyday, I would try to post something from our #autismjourney to spread #awareness #AutismAwareness #autismfamilies
How do you know if your child loves you/hates you, needs you/doesn’t care about you, is hungry/hurting etc? In #autism we usually guess the need of the child depending upon the intensity of the #meltdown or tantrum. #AutismAwareness #AutismAwarenessMonth #AutismFamilies @yaps9
Avani (my daughter) hadn’t started talking till 2 years of age. That got us worried and we were soon given the diagnosis that our child is on #autismspectrum Although she has speech, am still waiting for her to say ‘mumma’ minus any demand. #AutismAwareness #AutismAwarenessMonth
When meltdowns strike, others have a choice to either sit through it or run away... mothers sit through it, no matter what and decide what needs to be ignored, what can be done, what’s the cause and what’s the way out while silently praying that it ends soon #AutismAwarenss
#AutismFamilies don’t crave for sympathy, they just deserve a ‘normal’ life. I’d like to request a few things from a few professionals, friends and relatives to do, if you really want to contribute towards #AutismAwareness and #AutismAcceptance
If you’re a teacher, try a little harder for that ‘lost’ child to register you. Don’t call him/her hopeless because he/she may be a poor listener but your words are cutting through the heart. #autismawareness #AutismAwarenessMonth #AutismFamilies #AutismAcceptance
“Autism is not contagious, but kindness is”... #autismawareness #AutismAwarenessMonth #autismfamilies #AutismAcceptance
If you’re a doctor, consider making a room in your clinic i.e #sensory friendly for ppl with #autism. Soft lights, no strong smell and a ball pool for kids can help loads in making wait time easier for us. #AutismAwareness #AutismAwarenessMonth #AutismFamilies #AutismAcceptance
If you’re a flight attendant, be more considerate towards the kid screaming during take off/landing, holding his/her ears. Instead of asking the mother to ‘control’ the child, offer your help. An announcement to others to kindly be sensitive wud help. #AutismAwareness
If you own a hotel/restaurant, have you ever thought of making it #autism friendly? So many of #autismfamilies avoid dining out because ppl judge us for ‘screaming’ kids. Can you help us have a normal life? #AutismAwareness #AutismAcceptance
If you’re an artist, can you dedicate two days a week to teach children on #autism spectrum? Apparently, our kids are good with colours and textures. They just need to be taught to control their sensories and channelise their creativity. #AutismAwareness #AutismAcceptance
If you run a shop/store, please be more kind to the child who can’t wait to open a chocolate till it’s billed. Waiting is a huge problem with our kids and trust me we are working on it. #AutismAwareness #AutismAcceptance #AutismAwarenessMonth
If you’re a sports coach, please dedicate a couple of days in a week for #autistic kids and adults 🙏🏻 Medicines, depression, lack of self awareness can be conquered through meaningful physical activity. #AutismAwareness #AutismAcceptance #AutismAwarenessMonth
Just recovered from a 30 minute long tantrum for no reason. If you’re mother of a child on #autism spectrum, all I can say is ‘have patience’. No, it’s not easy and you didn’t sign up for this. But it’s here. Don’t be harsh on yourself or the child. #Awareness
Do you have a friend who’s child is on #autism spectrum? Have you noticed how she’s fading away from her social circle? Have you made any effort to give her confidence to still be a part of those get togethers and feel connected with the rest of the world? #AutismAwareness
#AutismFamilies lose friends coz they can’t catch up with the rest of the gang in hosting parties or joining outings. Then, ppl stop inviting. #AutismAwareness and #AutismAcceptance is more than just talking about it. #AutismAwarenessMonth
My daughter won’t get many invites for kanjak tomorrow. Not many would be comfortable with a little girl running around their drawing room on ashtami. #AutismAwareness #AutismAcceptance #AutismAwarenessMonth
But I still consider myself lucky with friends who understand my Avani’s limitations. @AditiAnarayanan specially asked me to get Avani for her Kanjak pooja last year. She was totally cool with my kid leaving about twenty stickers on her carpet. #AutismAcceptance
My neighbour sweetly came home to do Avani’s Kanjak Pooja, and my madam blew off the diya in pooja thali 🤭 This happened because we have been practising blowing candles since the age of 3... now she does it every time she sees a candle or diya! #AutismAwareness
Apparently, skills like blowing, spitting etc are important aspects of tongue movement that are pre requisites to speech. #AutismAwarensss
#AutismAcceptance
#AutismTherapies
#AutismFamilies celebrate every little skill...
This is for all those who ask me ‘how’s Avani now?’ I really don’t know what do you expect in answer. #Autism is in her system and there is no medicine or magic that can remove it forever. #AutismAwareness #AutismAcceptance #AutismFamilies Image
Who says #autistic people are lost in their world? They don’t listen/react in a ‘typical’ way? Avani must’ve seen me wear those heels many a times and finally decided to try them today. #AutismAcceptance is complete when we start seeing our child minus the #autism label. Image
For us, #AutismAwareness doesn’t begin or end with April. We are living #autism and will continue to urge you to #AcceptAutism 🙏🏻 #AutismFamilies
