FYI... if I cut you off and finish your sentence it is NOT my intention to be rude or disrespectful. Subconsciously, my brain genuinely believes that doing this is a sign that I am LISTENING and I UNDERSTAND what you are saying... and it is 100% automatic and unintentional.
So, it took me a long while to figure out why I do this. It's 100% meant to let the other person know I am listening and understand what they are saying. Almost like my brain wants to prove that I'm paying attention.
I feel like this is along similar lines of sharing a personal story to explain to the other person that I have gone through similar things and understand what they are going through.

Ugh. Listening to @boom973 this morning, and they're centering autism moms for "Autism Awareness Day".

As an autistic, I'm so sick of the voices of autism-adjacent people being centered and elevated in matters of autism.

Autistic voices are what should matter this month!
Bonus crap points for using the words "dealing with", when talking about the perspective of an Autism mom.

The only "dealing with" that should be discussed in terms of autism awareness, is all of the nonsense we have to deal with from non-autistics.
"What she has to deal with", when discussing the autism-adjacent ... It's gross. It's dehumanizing.

So let this be a reminder as Autism Awareness/ acceptance week/ month is coming up… DO NOT SUPPORT National Autistic Society in the UK. @Autism #autism #autistic #AutismAwareness #AutismAcceptance #actuallyautistic #allautistics
If you want to learn more about this therapy and how harmful it is then here’s a link to a document explaining what it is and how it’s harmful and it includes links to the research studies that prove ABA/ PBS therapy is harmful docs.google.com/document/d/11_…

@abaukdiscussion #BanABAtwitter.com/i/web/status/1…
Also for YEARS the National Autistic Society’s young Autistic ambassadors have tried to get them to make a statement against PBS therapy and to STOP funding it and hiring ABA/PBS therapists but so far they’ve had zero luck. #autism #autistic #ActuallyAutistic #allautisticstwitter.com/i/web/status/1…

Being Autistic for me is so similar to having my invisible illness and being an ambulatory wheelchair user due to peoples judgements and assumptions about my disabilities and physical health.
#ActuallyAutistic #allautistics #AutismAcceptanceMonth #AutismAcceptance
(I’ve had 3 knee surgeries and will need a knee replacement eventually and I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and heart condition etc)
1. People say I don’t look Autistic.
People also say I don’t look sick or disabled. But it’s not something you can always actually physically see. You can’t see Autism just like you can’t see a lot of disabilities and physical health conditions.

Today's thread:

How to create a space for Autistic Adults.

How to design and decorate your home that feels welcoming to an autistic person?

#AutismAcceptanceMonth
#AutismAwarenessMonth
#ActuallyAutistic
Background:

i) About a year ago, I started looking for interior designers who have experience in designing homes for autistic adults - someone who designed one home. I was not looking for an expert.

Spoiler alert (Not!) - I did not find any.
ii) So I did the usual - Research.

Most search hits were about children.

I have no idea what they think happens to autistic children when they grow up?

Yesterday I asked you what your neuroatypical superpowers were.

Let me do a small-ish thread on my superpowers.

Some of them are very similar to what you shared.

A thread.

1) I love big data and I cannot lie.

I am not a statistician. It is not heavy duty maths.
But often, for work (and sometimes for fun too), I have to look at patterns.
I tabulate judgments and analyse them.

Even though the content is very #TW-ish, I love doing this so much.
2) My "special interest" changes every few months.
But when I'm in that zone,I am obsessed about it.

Suddenly, one day, I cannot look at it anymore. Until few months later, when I am again interested in it.

I call it "Jhum irrigation" of brain

Hi folks,

This is @PinguicVerse here.

Before I begin, I want to apologise for the delay.
We were facing some technical issues.

I am from India, currently based in Ireland.

I am autistic.

I also manage @_serotonin_club. This is a club for first person narrative by neurodivergent people in South Asia.

theserotoninclub.wordpress.com
My professional profile is a bit scattered right now.

I am a lawyer, researcher, writer, solemniser, and a comedian.

The core of everything I do is inclusion and accessibility. My understanding and knowledge of both is ever emerging and changing.

Idk what the TERF said this time and I don't care to. But I've seen enough folks talking to know our agency is being questioned again. And during #AutismAcceptanceMonth of all times.

I'm autistic. I'm transgender. Y'all are just gonna have to get used to us existing.
As autistic people there's a lot we don't get agency over.

For the love of god. Letting us assert our own genders is some of the most basic control you can give us over our own lives.

We have higher rates of being trans & nonbinary. Get used to it.

#AutismAwarenessMonth
Why are there higher rates of trans & nonbinary identities?

We don't know yet, because the only thing people like to study in the #autism field is how to make us be less autistic.

But stop assuming nefarious reasons.

One theory? We're more likely to question social norms.

When #AutismAwarenessMonth is a time of year that thousands of Autistic people hate the most, you have to consider the question:

"Why?"

If you don't already know the reasons, this is a thread for you.
April is a month when allistic people are the loudest in speaking over Autistic voices; when Autistic ppl watch progress unravel while being bombarded by people with good intentions & able1$t impacts who double down on the harm they cause instead of letting Autistic people lead.
April is a month of able1$t puzzle pieces, functioning labels, pseudoscience, talks of "cures", vaccine disinformation, "epidemic" fearmongering, Autism Speaks propaganda, tokenisation & exploitation of Autistic ppl, inspiration p0rn, saviourism, & more. Rinse & repeat each year.

Many people are pushing for the relabelling of #AutismAwarenessMonth to #AutismAcceptanceMonth, the reasoning being that we are past the need for awareness & that acceptance is more important.

I disagree. While well-intentioned, I believe that this perspective has a major flaw.
Because autism awareness spear-headed by non-Autistic people has been persistently more harmful than helpful, I get why many Autistic people want to distance themselves from the mainstream approach to autism "awareness". I'm one of those people!

However...
When people say "We don't need autism awareness anymore, we're past that!" I have to ask: Awareness for whom?

True acceptance cannot come about unless awareness is done RIGHT. Awareness is still direly necessary, particularly for more marginalised demographics.

Hi, non-autistic parents of autistic kids - I'm an autistic adult and I would like to help. I hear a lot how hard it is to raise an autistic kid and I would just like to say that yes, everything is difficult when you do it wrong. #AutismAwarenessMonth #autism #ColorTheSpectrum
This is not me being rude, it is the truth. When everything you're told to do by the “experts” is the absolute worst thing you could be doing, the entire process will be difficult & the results cannot ever be what you are hoping for. The experts are the ones making your life hard
The truth is, when allowed to develop naturally, autistic people develop all the same skills that you have but in a different way. If you stunt our developmental process with training like ABA, you are preventing your child from developing into their adult brain. You're doing it.

We’re only in the first week of April & I’ve already received a multitude of emails asking about how to respectfully speak about Autism & Autistic people.

Here are a few gentle reminders, for those of you who want to be good allies this month:
In the debate over “Autistic Person” or “person with autism”, though individual opinions can and do vary, Autistic person is preferred by most Autistic (not all) people.

It’s always good to ask & respect the individual’s choice in how to identify themselves.
Aspergers is being phased out as a diagnosis though some Autistic people have received this label in recent years (depending on where they live in the world).

Autistic is Autistic.

Separating Autistic people this way harms all of us even those who are given the Aspergers label.

THREAD FOR CJ
A few years back, the mother of a young autistic boy reached out to tell me that her son died and that her last good memory with him was reading our book, I am Albert Einstein, which is all about being different. Needless to say, we surprised
her at her son’s school, sending signed copies, etc — but today we get to do one better. On today’s episode of Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum, we’re featuring Temple Grandin. In that episode, we hid a very special easter egg: the boy, CJ, who now gets to live on forever.
It’s obviously meaningful to us, to the mom, and to anyone out there who needs the reminder that being different is a beautiful thing. To everyone marking #AutismAwarenessMonth, we see you. Love you, CJ. #AutismAcceptanceMonth

1. Oh was yesterday #AutismAwarenessDay? Dang. I missed it. Instead I stayed off of social Media and spent a lovely day with my #ActuallyAutistic family not waving jigsaw pieces around, turning blue or spreading misinformation around that makes money for charities.
2. Later on I did a 3hr workshop on #AutisticMasking to 400 lovely Danish people with @DrAmyPearson. I missed #AutismAwarenessDay yet still somehow managed to pass on a shitload of useful & practical #Autism knowledge to a shitload of people
3. Its strangely like there's no need to have #AutismAwarenessDay, #AutismAwarenessWeek, or #AutismAwarenessMonth because for many Autistic people every day is, week and month of the year where we put out immensities of useful & productive #Autism information in various forms.

It’s official April. You may have heard that April is considered “Autism Month” to many people.

A few gentle reminders to non-Autistic people, as we jump into this month:
1. Please step aside and let Autistic People lead the conversation about Autism this month.

Historically, April has often been a time non-Autistics speak over Autistic voices, effectively silencing us and cutting us out of conversations about issues that impact us.
2. Please DO help to amplify the voices/words of Autistic people on Autistic issues this month (and all year long).

i started interviewing my best friend @hejitsfrida about myself and i keep trying to get her to say mean stuff about me but she won’t 😂 hell i’ll just pop this into the #AutismAwarenessMonth hashtag so they can learn how actual allies talk about autistic people

Well, April is about to start.

While this mostly means spring, fresh air, going outside, spring break, etc... for autistic people, this is the most stressful, dehumanizing, and awful time of the year.

You see, April is " #AutismAwarenessMonth ".

(Thread)
You would think it would be a month about us, learning about us, coming to an understanding and maybe learning to have empathy for the #ActuallyAutistic, but - in general - that's not the case.

No, April ends up being a month to center the parents of autistic children.
You know, because being centered 11 other months of the year isn't enough.

April is when we see an increase in well-meaning (I hope?) posts about autism, featuring the parents of autistics, rather than autistics themselves.

This is the start of my 2021 #AutismAwarenessMonth thread. I hope I'll have the stamina to complete it before the end of April.

You may be wondering why I am not saying #AutismAcceptanceMonth, and that brings me to a content warning... Abstract art in blue, grey and purple, with the letters A U
I'm going to talk a lot about ableism and ableist abuse.

There are also good parts to this story, events that have happened since the last #AutismAwareness Month, events that hold promise for our future. 😊

But we'll begin our tale on a grim day in history: 11 February 2005. 😑
What happened on 11 February 2005?

If you’re LGBTQ and not autistic and opposed to autistic people using the word Pride bc you think it appropriates your struggle, I am going to need you to shut the fuck up and go educate yourself about autistic people, gender, and sexuality. It’s the same struggle. We’re you.
Autistic people do not have the same relationship to gender and sexuality that allistic people do because social constructs are not real to us. Interpreting the words the way they were originally defined, no autistic people are cis. We can’t be put in that box by default.
Lots of autistic people identify as cishet for the same reason lots of allistic queer and trans people did at one time - intense social pressure and not seeing any other options. Even many terms used in the queer community don’t fit us well. We are so alone.
