Me e-mailing every editor who has accepted my work but not published it yet to confirm publication dates for my tenure file CV.
Look, there is one book chapter that I wrote in 2015 and the last I heard (in Jan 2018) it was supposed to be published in Oct 2018. It’s April 2019 & I haven’t heard from the editors in over a year so...
I currently have 5 articles/chapters/essays accepted & 5 more under review. Only 4 of these pieces were submitted in 2018 or 2019, the rest have been languishing in academic publishing purgatory for years. Remember kids: don’t rely on any single publication for tenure.

Ok Twitter, I now have 9,898 followers & I’m about to go to bed. Can we make it 10k by the time I wake up? One of my 2019 goals was to increase my public intellectual work/reach, including getting to at least 10k followers (I started the year at 3.5k). Can we make it happen?

Holy shit. Just accidentally binged @ramy on @hulu. It was so fucking good yall. Such complex, interesting narratives; at times very uncomfortable or dark, but somehow consistently amusing & humorously real.
It reminds me a little of Master of None, but with more depth? It’s just gets more powerful with every episode. I did not mean to watch it in one day but I did. I fucking did.
Highly recommend for children of immigrants & millennials raised in religious households. It’s not my story but Lord if I didn’t feel some of those episodes in my bones.

What I’m saying is: Go watch #Ramy.

I’ve had multiple ppl tell me that if I don’t get tenure I have a lawsuit on my hands & yet a part of me is still like: Racism & sexism are wild & I trust no white man’s “meritocracy”. I’ll feel confident I have tenure when I see the paperwork that says so & not a second sooner.
There are too many horror stories of talented, accomplished women of color being denied tenure, particularly at elite universities. There are too many stories of people working themselves into health crises & strained relationships for 6 yrs only to be told no.
You can’t ask me to put faith in a system that has harmed & failed so many people I admire. I will believe it when I see it. And in the meantime, I’ll be spending this summer preparing myself for what I do if it’s a no.

And now, because no one asked for it, here are my top eight #editor pet peeves. Style is subjective, and some places allow for more vernacular uses than others. But if I am your editor, no matter where I work, you can bet I will axe the following. Mild snarkiness incoming:
8) “first discovered” – redundant in almost all cases (how do you discover something for the second time?)
7) “centered around” – illogical; you can be “centered on” and you can “revolve around” but they can’t be mashed together

As the new cycle of academic conferences is about to launch, here’s some advice for #Twitterstorians hoping to secure their first book contract and facing looming deadlines to have their #tenure dossier in order 1/
Editors (who are all under enormous pressures of their own) will show interest, say all the right things. They will show genuine interest in your manuscript...but they can’t guarantee that your book will be out by *your* professional deadline. 2/
Some editors have dozens and dozens of books in the pipeline. For every prize-winning book, there are many more that received considerably less attention because, hey, there are only so many hours in a day. 3/

Seeing lots of PhD students starting out on their journey, as well as plenty in the middle, and some towards the end. Twitter was a wonderful tool for moral support, so I thought I'd put together a few thoughts about the process, for the @phdforum, #phdchat and #phdweekend folk.
1. The most important one right at the start. Look after yourselves. You are doing a PhD, but it shouldn't define who you are. I made the mistake of becoming consumed by it, and it took its toll on my health. Be engaged and committed, but remember to live your life too.
2. Forge a good relationship with your supervisors early on, and make sure you know what they expect from you, and what you should expect from them. Will your meetings be weekly/monthly? Will they read your work regularly? Agree on the working relationship early on.

Amateur press associations are one of the interesting kinds of social network founded in 1/
the late 19th century. An apa has a membership list. Each member writes up their submission for the next distribution ("issue", effectively) and sends a copy for each member to the central mailer, who collates them and sends the results out. You get a copy of each thing 2/

Since starting my business, networking and meeting new people has become a part of life. I have chats with several new people every week.

If I could go back in time, I’d tell myself to start doing this as a student and then as a full time worker.

It would’ve helped me SO much.
Just one benefit, in case you aren’t convinced: It has given me this immense financial security blanket, one I don’t even need right now. If I ever need some money, I know many people needing work done in the industry (who now know & trust me) who I can call for a contract.
Couple tips for newbies at this:
- The #1 mistake I see is not being concise when asking to talk/meet up. A long letter is not just hard to read & likely to be skipped over, it's not considerate of someone's time & even a red flag- "Maybe they don't understand healthy boundaries"
