And now, because no one asked for it, here are my top eight #editor pet peeves. Style is subjective, and some places allow for more vernacular uses than others. But if I am your editor, no matter where I work, you can bet I will axe the following. Mild snarkiness incoming:
8) “first discovered” – redundant in almost all cases (how do you discover something for the second time?)
7) “centered around” – illogical; you can be “centered on” and you can “revolve around” but they can’t be mashed together
6) “and also” – redundant to the max
5) “begs the question” – strictly speaking, this does not mean what you think it means; Google it.
4) “dark side of the moon” – not how the orbital dynamics work, try again.
3) “x different countries/samples/bananas/cats” – redundant; if there are multiples of a thing, odds are they are different from each other
2) “one must” – one must avoid sounding as stiff as a 19th-century lord; write it how you’d say it out loud to a friend instead
1) “manned” or “manmade” – c’mon, y’all, it’s 2019. Even NASA has stopped using this dated phrasing.
