A few weeks ago @filmspotting asked for the Overlooked Films of the 2000s. Following their lead, I decided to do my own list. Sorry guys, I was not able to limit myself to 5, I had to have at least 10. These are my 10 overlooked films of the past decade:
1. Mindgame, by Masaaki Yuasa. The many-faced masterpiece. You can read it in multiple ways, but I choose to see it as one of the most inspirational works of the 21st century. Also, incredibly funny.
2. Guy Maddin works in the 2000s. Maddin's cinema manages to make incredibly cool again aesthetical tropes of the 20s. His movies deserve to be much better known. My favorite may be Cowards bend the knee, but the whole decade is amazing: The Heart of the world, My Winnipeg...
3. All about Lily Chou Chou, by Shunji Iwai (@iwaishunji). The movie that started my cinephilia. Incredibly innovative in its form, and deeply psychological in its matter.
4. 36th Precinct, by Olivier Marchal. Probably the best crime movie of the decade. It's better known that a lot of the other movies in this list, but I find hard to believe that such an accessible and entertaining work is not more mentioned.
5. Fulltime Killer, by Johnnie To. The best movie from the best Hong Kong action director. "The man who shot Liberty Valance" of China.
6. Cigarette Burns, by John Carpenter (@TheHorrorMaster). Yeah, technically it's not a movie (a 60 minutes episode for Masters of Horror), but this may very well be at the level of the best Carpenter, and people just don't talk enough about it.
7. Amer, by Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani. Continuing with horror, Cattet and Forzani extract the best from giallo (its aesthetics, its disturbing psychology) and concentrate it into an 87 minutes masterpiece.
8. Foster Child by Brillante Mendoza. Mendoza would later become famous for winning best direction at Cannes with Kinatay, but this is his best movie. A masterpiece that manages to be a tear-jerker and happy at the same time.
9. Se nada mais der certo, by José Eduardo Belmonte. Brazil's Scorsese + Michael Mann. I watched it 10 years ago in a small film festival, and never heard again about it. It deserves more recognition.
10. In the City of Sylvia, by José Luis Guerín. The best incarnation of a certain type of romanticism. It may be harder to watch in the current era, but the young me was very fond of it.
I also would like to mention other great overlooked movies like Arrivederci amore ciao; Life can be so wonderful; Not Your Typical Bigfoot Movie; Tokyo Sonata; Euphoria or Searchers 2.0.
